But I get it when people are getting fired for 5 year old tweets. I believe in people changing and learning from mistakes. It should only matter if they're showing the same problematic behavior all the way up to the present.

There's a difference between supporting it against people/companies who are genuinely, repeatedly, to-this-day terrible, vs supporting it against someone who made a few dumb comments as a teenager 10 years ago or whatever.

The problem is we're cancelling the wrong people. Cancelling celebrities like Gina Carano is a waste of time. That's just going after the low hanging fruit because they said some dumb things. The people that should be cancelled are the sleazy politicians, the predatory movie execs, the people behind the scenes. Obviously that's harder to do because they haven't said any knee jerk tweets that we can use for ammo, but we know they're out there. Those are the real people that need to be cancelled. And the only people that know the truth are the people that work with them. They need to step up, just like when they stepped up with Weinstein.

I think stuff like this is seeing the direction the person was going and getting rid of them before they go further and people use the tweets to call you out for not reacting sooner. It's lose lose for the companies image. Not that they have a good image to begin with.

Cancel culture has always existed and even the people who are"anti cancel culture" are for it. They might speak with passion how they're ideological against it, but for topics they feel are odorous, they obviously don't think there's anything wrong with people taking a social/financial hit. It's really a question of people disagreeing with what topics should be unspeakable

It's like political correctness. Everyone has their own definition of it.

Personally though, I wish companies stopped overrating the impact of social media. They end up making stupid decisions and firing people, when if they just wait a week, all the screaming online will be forgotten about.
I'm just pretty against people losing jobs because jobs are so important and tied to things like healthcare in the US. For people with regular jobs especially.
