my mom used to work at Waldenbooks, but that seems like ancient history now
Borders has also gone bye-bye, but iirc Barnes & Noble still exists (they better, I still have a gift card from them...)

Dark Horse Comics still exists as a publisher, but they had the coolest weeb stores back in the day.

On that note, there used to be privately owned weeb stores, and I miss them dearly, if only for nostalgia value. They were out of the way, small, cluttered, and scarcely populated, but if you only ever knew about DBZ, Sailor Moon, and Samurai Pizza Cats, it was a magical world.

Radio Shake is the first that comes to mind....as a chain.

But I would also like to say, Mom and Pop science nerd Rock Shops.
Damn, I miss those.

Yes there are still rock shops, but they tend to be wanna be hippy metaphysical shops...and that's just not the same. ((Also, the prices seem to be as astronomical as their intentions))

I mean I can go one about places like Sears but it's the little local places that have gone away that matter.

I used to always buy Pumas from BJ's Shoes on Main St in my hometown. Brent the owner passed away from cancer about eight years ago. Game Time on Robinhood always used to put out new releases a few days early. I sorta have mixed feelings about it though because that's where I sold all my rare or sought after games for gas money back when I was broke. Lucky Strike Vintage on the corner of Seventh and Trade always had cool shit. They normally asked too much for the good stuff but you could normally haggle with them. Too many restaurants to count. Too many little pop up shops in flea markets that just didn't come back one day.

Rock Shops

The one that opened in Boone when I lived there was still good. Bought a few patches and a couple T's that had album art you wouldn't normally find. Probably a little illegal but hey.

how could I forget FuncoLand? I was pissed when GS pretty much killed them off (although ironically GS is also on the way out)

I also remember shopping with my mom at a grocery store called Eagle that's long extinct

Nah.
Its dead to me and I use to work there unlike the douche bags that are there now.

They use the media dept (games, cds, blu rays) as storage space for their backroom equipment instead of actual stuff to sell.

The last Montgomery Wards I'm aware of closed 5 years ago. I stocked up on socks and underwear (all since replaced).

Woolworths and Foodtown.

Yes, the former still exists in Australia, but not in NZ anymore, and I don't think the latter exists in either. They all rebranded as Countdown stores now. (Of course, in practice they were just Countdown stores with a different logo and higher prices anyway. Owned by the same company and all.)

EDIT: Also lol, K-Mart doesn't exist anymore in some places? It seemed to disappear for a while here but it's majorly made a comeback lately.
