The US could eventually overwhelm Vietnam by the immensely higher firepower they had, granted at a high cost to both civilian kills and soldier casualties. What I said is meaning China still holds mostly the same Marxist values as their founding father, Mao Zedong. The idea of opening up the economy was from Deng XiaoPing. The idea of opening up their political system was not and never was considered. At this point, you could argue a communist state has more to do with the economy being centrally planned and the equalisation of wealth amongst society than it has to do with the government merely being the middleman. But given how the current perception is like, we can much rather just label totalitarian governments that previously labelled themselves socialist as communists even till today if they still hold onto most of their same political beliefs and practices.
