I think he did a really good job. I think his critical analysis is spot on.

A lot of FF8 has great ideas but are never fleshed out properly.

Positive note: the first disc of FF8 is arguably the best introduction to a Final Fantasy.... PERIOD. And... then it goes downhill from there.

Knew as soon as I saw the upload he was going to nuke this one from orbit. Hes always been vocal about how much he hated 8 even as a tweener, and I think he only has 2 and 13 ranked lower.

It was way more complicated than that. Cliff notes?

- Projared and Heidi have a difficult time in their marriage. Heidi proposes an open relationship and Jared accepts.

- Heidi has a boyfriend and she tells Jared to go after others.

- Jared is close with another woman (Holly) who was married to Ross O'Donovan. (RubberRoss). They end up getting together (I'm unsure if this happened before Ross and her broke up or not. They might have had an affair)

- Heidi, after having supported them getting together, decides she doesn't like this idea anymore. This is AFTER Jared has asked for a trial separation and Heidi denying him, threatening his career.

- Jared continues his new relationship and pursues divorce. Again Heidi is threatening and denying him this.

- Jared eventually does go through with the divorce and announces it online. Heidi then tries to tank his career by making up claims of emotional and mental abuse at the hands of Jared.

- Jared and Holly show proof that Heidi was supportive of them before and then immediately decided against it, threatening to tank his career if he didn't immediately stop associating with Holly. Heidi would text Jared literally hundreds of times while he was sleeping on the road demanding he call her immediately and stuff like that.

- All this goes public with two people saying that Jared made unwanted advances on them as 16 year Olds. Jared again shows evidence that these people were lying and lied about their age. Jared admits he had a blog where consenting adults would share nudes, admits that while at the time he didn't think it was a problem given his meager popularity, he realizes that regardless of his own view of his influence he still has influence and that he was in a position of power.

- the two accusers both retract their statements and basically disappeared after.

All the evidence shown to prove himself innocent of the stuff that would he illegal he showed a few weeks later as he was instructed by lawyers to allow them the opportunity to get his defense together should any charges be laid.

I'm not gonna say he was a Saint by any stretch, but to me at worst he helped a woman cheat on her husband. That side of everything is pretty unknown since Ross was seemingly fine ending their marriage and didn't want to address it.

Anyways, back to the video.

I love his critique on the battle system. There is no benefit to actually BEATING anything at all. You actually gain the most from taking what spells you want and either running or carding out.

The game is made inherently easier, carding gets you resources for later, and you still get the benefits of having fought the fight.

His point was that Squall's personality changes over the course of the game, but it wasn't believable because he's so cold to everyone, and that the friendly dialogue choices were out of character.

Which is a stupid point, because that's just describing what a character arc is; a character changing based on the events in the narrative.

I mean, I'm not saying it's Shakespeare. But....it's a final fantasy game. And for a final fantasy game it was decent enough.

I get the beef with the junction system though. By far the most easily exploitable/breakable combat system I've ever played in a turn based jrpg.

I think you can have a decent narrative if the characters are likeable. The problem is that Squall is DEFINITELY not likeable at all and the rest of the main cast are caricatures of the main aspect of their character.

It is pretty telling when a side character who they tried to make kinda silly and goofy (Laguna) was the best character by a country mile.

I'd have to go back and play it again to really give an insightful opinion, but I don't really remember liking Laguna or his sections of the story very much when I played ff8 back in the day. Thought it kind of broke up the story and I cared more about what was going on with the main party.

I thought ff8 for all it's faults had one of the more interesting settings of the series. And I disagree with him that nothing interesting happens until the end of the first disc. I thought the first disc was the best part of the game, with the end of the first disc probably being the best part of the narrative imo. The narrative surrounding the rivalry with seifer was probably the most memorable aspect of the story for me

I agree the ending is pretty bad. But once again, it's final fantasy. A flat ending that doesn't make a lot of sense is pretty standard.

No, his complaint was that Squall changes out of nowhere unless you choose the dialogue options that have him warm up. The issues are that the friendly "out of character" choices that warm him up, are just that choices you make. It'd be fine if their were difference to the story based on your choices, if Squall warms up if you choose the options for him to warm up, or stays cold if your choose the options that are cold. But the game doesn't do that he ultimately warms up and the only difference your choices make are how out of nothing it is.

Squall is likable if you play the game with the understanding that he is a child and that his aloof and off-putting nature is a result of his fear of being abandoned because of what happened to him as a child, and the game is literally about him growing to become a person who learns to let people in and begin to rely on others and be more friendly.

Laguna doesn't necessary get the screen time one would expect a "second main character" to get, but he is one. Because there are two central plot threads in the game: defeating the sorceress, which is fleshed out through both the perspective of Laguna and Squall, and the romance between squall and rinoa, which Laguna's story is important to because in Laguna's story, his failure to communicate his feelings for Julia echo Squall's own communication issues causing him problems, and then after they finally tell each other how they feel, she writes him a song and he gets sent away for war. the song she writes "eyes on me" is played throughout the scenes with squall and rinoa, because Julia is rinoas mother and laguna is Squalls father, so their failed romance is fufilled through their children.

Laguna got less screen time than ProJared's dick tho. He's just a side character and doesn't do anything in the main story at all except help them go to space or something at the end

Plus that "twist" that Laguna is Squall's dad doesn't add anything to the story and is only referenced in like 1 line
