I think it's a pretty even split between the fanbase, from what I've seen.

Asylum has the atmosphere and Metroidvania thing going for it, and City has improved gameplay, encounters, and offers even more for fans of the property.

I prefer Asylum, but City is still an amazing game, IMO.

I think me playing it way after it helped. I'd heard that the Batmobile was a constant thing, so I didn't find it as overwhelming as a lot of other people probably did.

Game was phenomenal. True, the main story could've used more predator missions and a few more on-foot combat sections, but the game was dope. Spent the most amount of time on it compared to the other Arkham games. And the stuff I was unironically looking forward to the most during its DLC run was the race tracks.

I felt it was cool...at first. When you first get access it was awesome to engage in high speed chases against cars and shit, or do small puzzles with it.

Then the game relied EXTREMELY heavily on it. EVERY puzzle needed it. EVERY boss fight needed it. EVERY mission included it. It wasn't like a gadget where it takes a minute or two to use and then you get right back to combat...it was every second. And the puzzles were ATROCIOUS! I don't want to spend 5 minutes driving back up to a spot just because I moved my car a little too far to the right and fell down, like in the ACE building.

Oh, oh, and the bosses. Remember that awesome boss fight against Deathstroke in Arkham Origins? LMAO, now sneaky tank.

Seriously, who thought sneaking around in a fucking tank was both logical and fun? Sneak around the back of an enemy, hit it, then run away. Whoooooo!

And remember the fight where you had to take down around 40 other cars which amounted to a fucking bullet hell sequence? God I LOVE it when games take on gimmick and ram it into the ground.

And yes, Riddler puzzles can suck it too. Finished every single puzzle in Arkham City and Asylum. Didn't even fucking bother with Knight, that game really pissed me off. And doing collectibles is usually something I don't bother with...so that really sucked, as I loved the previous 2.

The predator sections were so toned down, it really made me sad. All kinds of new toys and nothing to do them with.

The combat was fun as always...but yeah, lacking.

The boss fights were...what, Arkham Knight and who else exactly? No one? The game dropped the ball in favor of focus on the Batmobile. Bleh.

Yeah I'll admit the boss fights were a big let down. I was pumped as hell to do the Deathstroke sidequest but it ended up with a retread of a tank boss from the story and he gets taken down in one hit in a cutscene. Lame as hell. Loved the game anyway but that pissed me off.

In retrospect, the series' boss fights aren't much to write home about in general. Mr. Freeze is a stand-out, but the other ones aren't all that memorable.

Yeah. I think Origins might have had the best boss fights (hence me being hyped to fight Deathstroke again) but considering the entire series that's not really much.

Grundy was great. Freeze was incredible. Every boss in Arkham Origins was extremely well done(standouts like Deathstroke, Firefly,, and Copperhead though!). Bane was also challenging and fun.

The Firefly and Deadstroke fights single handedly made the Origins the best in the series for me. Knights was the worst since it had the worst bosses and the force Bat tank sections.

I never really understood the hate for Origins. Was it better than the first two games? No. Did it really change much or improve on anything from City? Not really. Was it still a fun game? I definitely thought so.

Whenever Id see reviews slamming the game for just being more of the same from City, Id always think How is that a bad thing?

On one hand, I disagree with the problems. On the other, I understand them somewhat. People were expecting a Asylum > City level of change, when it was just more of the same. Then there was the glitches...I've never played a game that glitched so much. Not even Fallout. It wasn't bad glitches, like game breaking. Just needed a fresh load usually.

I'd get stuck in the level geometry, I'd fall through floors, mission events wouldn't trigger.

Oh, the MP was very fun too! Way more fun than expected.

In the last or second to last mission I had to crawl through a vent when the game glitched out and I fell through the floor. Right when that started, I hit a checkpoint.

I had 2 options: keep on falling forever or reload my checkpoint, which in turn made me fall through the floor again, forever.
And of course, there's only one savegame.

I was at 97% completion.

Needless to say, I never played that fucking shitty glitch crappy game again.

Asylum is way better

Atmosphere, pacing, great ideas.

City and Knight is just a sandbox and suffers for all the reasons sandbox games suffer, Yes it's more open and you can fly around but there's nothing really to do and that comes at the cost of coherant story or immersion.

City and Origins and Knight had nothing that can match the Scarecrow sections of Asylum

I liked it for what it was - Joker wanted to show the world that Batman was as much of a monster as he is, but the execution wasn't so great.

Batman was able to suppress the serum for some reason, and Joker kept showboating for the cameras, so the fight was super easy and not that fun, IMO.

but I like how it led to AC, and how the serum led to all the fatal side-effects.

I think both games are fantastic and a pretty perfect duology. Id have to give a slight edge to Asylum though. I like the overall atmosphere more and the tighter story.

Origins is great too (I loved seeing the areas from Arkham City when they were still just part of Gotham) and they did an amazing job with the Christmas atmosphere. I also like how the gameplay stayed true to what came before while adding in some cool new elements like recreating crime scenes. Ive played the game a bunch of times and can honestly say I never encountered any game-ruining glitches (this is on the 360 if that matters). Guess I got lucky.

Arkham Knight is ok, but I have a lot of stupid petty issues with it. The biggest crime of that game for me is that they changed the way you select gadgets and go into Detective Mode. Whyyyyy did they feel the need to change something that has been consistent with previous three games? Another thing that really bugged me with that game is that you dont get experience points for beating up random thugs while going through the city. Is it even possible to get every upgrade without doing a New Game +?

But I think my biggest and pettiest issue with the game is how different some of the characters look. And not just better graphics different. And I hate to sound like a typical internet neckbeard but I noticed mostly with the women; Catwoman, Harley, Ivy.. they definitely look different to me and almost like the developers went out their way to make those characters less attractive I dont know if theres any truth to that but dumb stuff like that has always bothered me.

I prefer City because of the better gameplay and not having 90% of the bosses be a Bane clone, but I still think Asylum is a good enough game in spite of those flaws that I see why someone would prefer it over city. I also genuinely think Origins is a much better game than Knight, which is the real oddball opinion hre.

Origins is just more City with better bosses and worse glitches.

It's 100% better than Knight imo. At least it didn't force in some dumb mechanic that you have to use for half the time you're playing the game.

When I was younger, I preferred City to Asylum but I ended up replaying the games last year. Now, I prefer the tighter, more focused Asylum over the open world of City. Both are still great games. Origins was fine. Blackgate, the game nobody played, was okay, too.

I have never replayed Knight since the year it came out. Personally, I have a lot of issues with that game. Many of them have already been listed in this topic such as the Tankmobile being forced upon the player way too much. The plot was very poorly written at times. Not to say that Asylum and City had fantastic written stories but you could tell Paul Dini was not involved with Knight.
