I used to find mochi relatively easily at Asian and other international mom-and-pop markets. You can probably do a search for those in your area.

Theres a Korean-American department store chain called H Mart. If youve got one close enough they probably have some.

Maybe a Mitsuwa if youve got one of those.

Costco used to sell it I think, not sure about now, havent been in a few years. Some restaurants sell it too around here (Vegas).

As for making it, shouldnt be that expensive.

Sadly the closest Costco i have near me isn't very close

I wonder how hard it'd be to make

My culinary delight skills aren't so amazing

Big mochi fan. I normally go after the Macha flavor. Luckily there's a Whole Foods and Trader Joes in the area that sells them.

Not at mine we dont:(
Which sucks, because Red Bean is the best flavor.

Also, putting ice cream in mochi dough is apparently a Japanese American thing. The confection is named for the glutinous rice dough, which is 100% Japanese.

Frozen ice cream mochi is so much worst. Unless you're getting it freshly made at a store, the mochi skin is all dry and hard which is not what real mochi suppose to be. I tend to stick to regular red bean mochi if it's pre-packaged.
