Not just how many, but which ones. Whoever is the most accurate gets to decide my signature (I haven't made one since I've been back). Nothing rude or moddable. I reserve the right to make the final decision. I promise to be fair. Also, feel free to recommend my girlfriend and I more books.

I have the unfair advantage of a good memory and talking about books with you, so I'm only going to name the ones I'm not 100% sure of:

Dune, The Blade Itself, American Gods, Something Wicked Comes This Way, Jurassic Park, Lord of the Flies

I could add four more if I named the ones I knew for sure.

Edit: well, to be fair, I just know that you read or plan to read the four I am thinking of. You could just be borrowing them from who actually owns them...

I've been meaning to ask you: have you read Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado? (I bring it up in response to this comment because one of the many blurbs at the beginning is from Jeff VanderMeer.) It's a collection of weird fiction stories with a bit of a feminist edge. There's a lot of cool stories.

I mean you could list them if you want. This will probably come down to the wildcards on the list anyway.

I haven't. I'm actually reading the first one right now. It shouldn't take me too long. There's too many books I want to read and so little time.

They're pretty short for a trilogy I think. Definitely relate with the too many books, too little time.

It doesn't help that I'm in graduate school right now too. I'm trying to balance doing my class readings and leisure readings but it's been difficult.

Well, Annihilation since we're already talking about it lol. Lies of Locke Lamora (which is coming up soon in my own pile!). The other two, I'm more 99.8% sure not 100%, but I'm pretty sure you mentioned 1984 and The Bluest Eye (also coming up soon in my own pile) recently too.

Yeah, I feel this. This is the first year I've been keeping track of all the books I've read and I'm already up to 27 (and I pretty much didn't read any books in January; also, not trying to humble brag or anything, I've got a lot of spare time rn and they've mostly been shorter books), but when I look at my list it feels like I've barely scratched it lol.

Yeah, but you sound way busier in life right now than I am. Plus, there's no competition except with yourself. And it's better to focus on quality than quantity imo! I know some people who give themselves arbitrary number goals to read (usually like 50 or 100 books in a year), but if I were to approach reading from that angle myself it would sap the joy of it because I would be more focused on hitting a number goal than enjoying or learning from what I'm reading. I'm just keeping track for fun.

So I just finished Annihilation right now. This book was a trip. It is definitely different from most things I have read before. It was interesting how the author attempts to describe the indescribable, things that are outside the realm of human experience. I'm not sure how I felt about it overall because I couldn't really wrap my head around everything that was happening. It almost seems like part of the point of the story is that some things are just unknowable to us. It was more about the journey itself than having any definitive answers to what was happening.

It's funny you say that. I just made a good reads account and set a 20 book goal for the year. Lol. I haven't quite figured out which books I want to get to most. The next book I'm going to read is for school. It's a quick read, then I might either read American Gods or Something Wicked This Way Comes.

Yeah, a big part of the enjoyment of Annihilation for me was the mystery and intrigue. I do think by the end of the series VanderMeer provides you with enough clues to piece together a theory of "what happened" essentially, but he leaves out enough for it to still be ambiguous. He's been on record saying that there is a concrete "answer" so to speak, but he never intends on divulging it. I know I've got my own theory for what exactly Area X is. But I think viewing it as more about the journey than the destination is a good way to approach it.
