Granted it's going to be different for some small mom and pop places, but every time you see someone say "Your bigmac will be 1000" bucks now or "Every restaurant will close" just isn't true at all.

Of course not because such statements are hyperbole. But businesses have plenty of methods for continuing to profit still without directly and obviously affecting the consumer.

From cutting hours, benefits, employees, downsizing, or lowering the quality of their products.

Theres never any legitimate argument against things like higher minimum wage, universal healthcare, universal basic income etc. unless you consider pro-business and anti-society to be legitimate

The thing about anti-minimum wage arguments is the glee in those that preach them have when talking about them. They'd love to see all the automation, not for the convenience, but just to spite the workers. They'd love to see the prices increase just to spite people. They'd love to see restaurants close and people be out of work just for spite.

As long as it is a gradual increase to allow small businesses time to adjust their prices without being fucked over, its not an overly big problem. Though Im not of the mindset that its really going to be some major equalizer either.

Im not convinced its right to allow small businesses that can only exist due to underpaying their employees to exist just because they are a small business.

Small business fetishization is really weird. Even "small" businesses in a lot of places are operated by well off people that dont need the income.

My fiance has worked in two different local businesses that cosntantly try to short people on OT and steal tips from the wait staff

Just an FYI but McDonalds corporate is a real estate company, not a food company. Theyre saying this because the number of people who actually work for McDonalds corporate (and not Franchisee #1038370192) who would get a pay raise is almost zero.

There's plenty of corporate stores. Many times they come from franchisees who fail to meet requirements and the store gets taken over by corporate.

The various franchised locations also have to pay mcdonalds for continued use of the brand.

Your alternative is a corporate overlord that has enough money to directly effect laws. Id rather trust a conglomerate of unorganized less rich people than a single entity that can essentially do anything it wants without repercussions.

If someone's claim to a livelihood involves buying a store from a chain so they can undercut the employees then they deserve to go under. Mother fuck mom and pop stores. They overcharge and pretty exclusively only hire family members.

When I said that it's going to be harder for mom and pop places I didn't only mean restaurants. The affects will be different for them since they don't need a desk person, drive thru person, cook or two, manager etc all at once. A small mom and pop place probably has a cashier or two. So the minimum wage as an overall operation cost per hour will go up in the fast food places but the true mom and pop small shops it won't hit as bad, but it could still be bad for them.

It's fine or even good for a company the size of McDonald's. Same reason Amazon is a proponent to raise the national minimum wage. Prices out competition

I'm sure they will do something shifty to continue maximizing their profits. A few years ago California passed new regulations that required large companies to provide all of their full time employees with health benefits and leave credits. Mcdonald's responded by changing a majority of their employees to part time. Part time employees don't get benefits.

They weren't the other ones. I can't remember off the top of my head all the news stories that were coming out but there were a few. Obamacare was another big one that had companies drop peoples hours to part time.

Edit: They weren't the only ones*

Its not so much the price inflation as it is the fact that theyre cutting and automating the workforce. When I go into a fast food restaurant, I usually see one person frantically trying to take orders in the lobby and the window at the same time as trying to expedite the orders.

The CEOs are telling everyone everything is fine because theyre working day and night to cut jobs and hours. One way or another, this wont result in them losing money because they have given so much money to politicians across the board that they can get away with this.
