I like both.

Goldeneye was definitely the pedigree of the two, but I'm a sucker for all the crazy guns in Perfect Dark.

Goldeneye was way better imo, I'm surprised the poll is a tie.

I'll also add that 007 Nightfire on the GameCube was even better than Goldeneye.

Unless you're a Bond freak then I don't know how anyone can think Goldeneye is better. I think it's a nostalgia thing since that one came first. Perfect Dark has basically everything there is to like about Goldeneye, but it's better than pretty much every way

It was never officially released so you have to emulate it, but it's Goldeneye in HD.

unless you're talking about that goldeneye skin they slapped onto the CoD engine, then no.

Not sure how it would be a nostalgia thing since they were both out around the same time. I played both when they were new and I hated Perfect Dark but we played multiplayer Goldeneye for years.

IMO anyone voting for GE is just nostalgic. I don't think GE had an attributes about it that PD lacked and the actual gameplay is certifiably better in PD.

Because like I said, Goldeneye came first lol. I think also that more people played it in general, so of course they aren't gonna choose PD if they never played it. PD came out late in the N64's life and then it had Halo on its heels

I don't remember the reason PD supposedly needed the expansion pak, but basically the whole thing was bullshit. Whatever it actually did enhance, it certainly couldn't make framerates better.

I think PD might have had worse frame rates than GE, but it also had more detailed graphics and animations, a huge amount of bots in MP, etc.

I'm saying that because I don't think people enjoy GE more than PD, they just think they do.

Likely because PD came out too close to the generational transition so peoples' memories of it are more fuzzy (in other words they spent more time playing GoldenEye so it sticks out more but spend some time with Perfect Dark and it'll be more evident how it fundamentally built on GE's design).

Plus it could just be fewer people played Perfect Dark period (for the same reason). I guess by that metric more people enjoyed GoldenEye than Perfect Dark (loophole in the topic post's wording).

If anything I'm way more nostalgic for perfect dark. It was an improvement over goldeneye in every single way. Single player was better, with more varied weapon types and mission objectives. Multiplayer was better with more options, more maps, and FRIGGIN BOTS to play against with your friends.

Perfect dark was like goldeneye 2.0

Or some people just liked GE better. I mean, I bought PD, played it, stopped and went back to GE. Literally a side by side comparison and I liked GE better. Not saying it was a better game for everyone but I preferred to to PD.

There's also an argument to be made that Goldeneye stood out more in the year it was released, and thus generated far more positive opinion than Perfect Dark, which was released later and which may have already have felt less innovative or more behind the times.

Or to put it another way, even if PD was an improvement on GE, it wasn't enough of an improvement to establish itself as a true successor. Three years doesn't necessarily feel like that large a time jump, but back then it represented a much larger span of technological advancement. Especially when tons of games like Half-Life, Quake III, Medal of Honor, Rainbow Six, and eventually Halo were all coming out and introducing far greater complexity and competition to the market.

Goldeneye established its reputation by standing out at a time when the field was much more open. Perfect Dark wound up being far less meaningful at a time when people were shifting their attention to other titles.

You might get a different answer if you showed both games to someone today who had never played either (and who preferably has never played a modern FPS either), but there's far more context to the question if you actually lived through that era.

And, plus, there's always going to be people who'd enjoy Goldeneye more just because they like the Bond franchise more than "Joanna Dark" and her world.

I think you could play the single player without the expansion pack, and 2 player deathmatch on a select number of maps. But co-op and 4 player splitscreen with max bots needed the expansion pack.

I know you "needed" the expansion pak to play it, but I don't know if you needed it. The story I remember with DK64 was that they had an unfixable memory leak, so they only required the expansion pak because it gave it enough memory for the leak to not crash the game. I think PD had a better reason for requiring it but it might also be more of a performance failsafe rather than the game being literally incapable of running without it.

Perfect Dark is GoldenEye+. It had everything GoldenEye should have had. Whats funny is that when GoldenEye released, I said to my friends that it would be neat if it had a counter-co-op mode. Welp...

That said, I played GoldenEye a lot more, because by the time PD released, most of my friends didnt play games much anymore.

If I remember right, there were features you couldn't actually play without the pak. I think they were multiplayer things like more bots or 4 player splitscreen. Also the framerate was really bad at times, but these were times so nothing unexpected.

I chose GE. I had both and can say I definitely had more fun with GE. PD was really GE with more content. It was good but for some reason felt absolutely souless.

Perfect Dark, and it's not close.

My friends all loved GoldenEye, and even before PD came out, I never liked GE.

And while they never switched to PD, I was very happy that TimeSplitters was their FPS series of choice next gen, because that is the all time greatest.

For me: 2 > 3 > 1

Though admittedly 3 was for sure the best with multiplayer, I played 2 way more (both in terms of single player and multiplayer).

What really seals 2 as my favorite was how difficult it was to beat Story on the hardest setting, as well as how hard it was to get every platinum medal. To this day, it's one of my favorite gaming accomplishments.
