LG has struggled to maintain prominence in the competitive mobile market. As a result, the company is reportedly preparing to announce that it will shutter its smartphone business.

According to The Korea Times, LG will announce that it will pull out of the smartphone market on April 5 after failing to turn a profit these past few years.

LG Electronics appears to have decided to pull out of its money-losing smartphone business and entered into a transition process to relocate its mobile communications employees to other business units, The Korea Times said.

LG has suffered operating losses since 2015, and despite churning out some truly innovative devices, the company hasnt been able to turn its mobile business around. The company attempted to find a buyer, allegedly entertaining interest from Volkswagen and Vietnams Vingroup JSC, but the talks seemingly didnt pan out.

As recently as January, an LG spokesperson said the company wasnt shutting down its mobile business. And, in fact, there were reports LG was working on new devices for this year, even teasing a rollable smartphone a few months back. As it was tentatively called, the LG Rollable was expected to offer a unique resizable screen that was capable of transforming.

If LG is indeed shuttering its mobile business, it means whatever it had planned for 2021 has been scrapped. LGs absence from the Android market would be a huge loss for the industry because it has come up with many great ideas. LG also helped create legendary phones like the Nexus 5 and Pixel 2 XL.

All we can say is that every possibility is open, a company spokesperson told The Korea Times. Although we cannot confirm that right now, we will announce the specific direction of our mobile communications business.

For now, well wait for official confirmation from LG about its future mobile plans. Today is April 1, which is tricky when reporting on major news. With an announcement allegedly coming on April 5, it wont be much longer before we know one way or the other.

I always get LG phones from Boost Mobile. This sucks. Looks like I'll be a Motorola Man now.

Haha, I just upgraded from my LG Stylo 4 two weeks ago to a nice Google Pixel 4a 5G. The Stylo served its purpose, but it was time to move on.

There's people in the Reddit thread for this saying that when they worked for a mobile carrier they sold less than 1 LG phone per year they were there.

I knew this day would come. I literally only buy used LG Flagship Phones(just bought the LG V60 which I'm typing on right now), because they have good specs, still have a headphone jack, Quad DAC, big screens, and SD Card slots.

But most importantly, I buy them because they are so unpopular that they depreciate fast enough where I can pick them up cheap. We knew looking at their terrible sales that they wouldn't keep throwing money away forever. For the time being at least I'm not going to lose anything. It's not like they actually support the phones they put out, so I was never expecting any more updates in the future on this device even if they stay in the game. They're the worst at this.

I have a pile of LG phones here. LG G Pro, Volt, G2, G3, G4, G6, G7, Flex 2, V10, V20, V35, V60.

Not all of them were mine, everyone in my family has had an LG at some point. Still have an old Lucky Goldstar VHS Player sitting around somewhere.
