Does changing the baseballs have that much of an affect on pitching? Because there's alot of nonos going on recently. These no hitters can't all be just a coincidence, right?

There's a couple things, definitely balls have something to do with it but also the fact most hitters are now going for like, "HOME RUN OR SWINGING STRIKE OUT!!!"

Pitching is getting better because:

* Pitchers generally throw harder/faster now than they did 10-20 years ago.
* Starters aren't going as deep into games, so hitters are facing fresh bullpen arms a lot more often.
* Analytics combined with repeated pitching changes are constantly putting pitchers in advantageous match-ups. The "three batter minimum" rule change was implemented partly to mitigate this as well as to speed up the pace of play.

Hitting is getting worse because:

* Defensive shifts have neutered many pull hitters, turning many singles/doubles into easy groundouts.
* Small ball is dead, and there are fewer steals or hit-and-runs than ever.
* Hitters are focusing on hitting balls high (partly because the only way some hitters can beat the aforementioned shift is to hit the ball over the fence) usually resulting either in homers, weak pop-ups or groundouts, walks, or strikeouts. Even hitters who don't actually have the power to actually hit well like this are trying to do it. Fuck you Harrison Bader, you're not a fucking power hitter and you never will be!

As a result of the above (and possibly other factors like different baseballs) every offensive stat besides home runs and walks is on a sharp decline, while strikeouts are at an all-time high. The last time the league-wide batting average was as low as it is this season, MLB lowered the mound to nerf pitchers and bring offense back to the league, and they may have to make a change like that again or risk losing a lot of fans.

I think if you get rid of the shift and maybe move the mound back 6 inches it would be enough to fix it.

I know this isn't technically MLB-related, but it's baseball-related... I just finished watching a baseball anime called One Outs, and there was a team in that show that cheated so much and in so many different ways that they make the Houston Astros look like saints by comparison.

Great show btw, I totally recommend it for any baseball fans out there.

Or I should say re-watching, since Princess Nine is actually the very first baseball anime I ever saw and I've re-watched it a few times in the nearly 20 years since the first time I ever saw it.

Probably not from what I've read. There's an outside chance that he'll be called up in September, but I would be surprised if he was. Gilbert should be up within the month too. And Kirby/Hancock next year makes me go hnnnnng.

No, you're not wrong. The advent of defensive shifts and the inability for many pull hitters to hit the ball the opposite way is part of what's led to this "just hit the ball over the shift" launch angle shit. It's not the only factor, but it's one of the bigger factors and one of the easiest for baseball to fix.
