There was a base game but there were so many cool mechanics and exploits and whatnot that actually created a new layer of meta to the game. Once people understood this meta, everyone overall got better but it's not like the game was a cakewalk, it still required skill and whatnot, you just had more options available and could turn runs around with proper min maxing. Edmund saw this and he hated it. He hated that people were exploiting it, hated that people could get good builds, and he insisted that Isaac should be a hard game all the time. It sickened him to see people develop a deeper understanding of the engine behind the surface. He tried to tell people, that's not the way YOU should play MY game. Rebirth came out with this in mind. Which was fine; Rebirth was actually really good on release. But he saw people were eventually good at Rebirth (which guess what, will happen with pretty much any game) and nerfed items. And then nerfed more items. And then nerfed items. And then buffed items. Haha jk, he nerfed more items. Then he saw people were still good (mind you, like the TOP 1% of players), and decided to add in certain bosses that didn't care how powerful you were and had health equivalent to your damage. Which defeats a huge reason Isaac is fun. It's fun to be OP sometimes. It's fun to turn runs around. It's fun to see bosses that gave you trouble on a previous run just melt like butter because your build is so ridiculous this time. It's fun having a bunch of random items work together to make you a uniquely powerful build. I just can't get behind his mentality of punishing players for making their own fun with the game by adding boring ass bosses, items that are complete filler or a waste. And get this. He actually went back and nerfed the old game. I couldn't believe it. Someone so petty about people understanding their game that he actually went to a previous version of the game waay after the sequel already came out, just to nerf the people who hadn't bought Rebirth yet. Finally, he created some super secret unlockable meant for the community to figure out, something like latitude and longitude coordinates in a desert with a capsule buried in the sand or something. I forget exactly what but it was something like that. That info was there to unlock a hidden character in the game....except that hidden character was already in the game's code. People datamined it and Edmund threw even more shame on his own community. Most likely as a way to not feel so dumb to have a "super secret" unlockable poorly hidden. Then in Afterbirth, he made an AR metagame which is more akin to what you described. Only after people solved it did they implement the character into the game. Which imo was still stupid af. I hate cryptic shit like that, more so if it requires you do to stuff in real life and it shuts down 99.99% of your audience from experiencing it. In recent interviews he's stated that the changes will make the game more fun now since another person took charge of most of them. Guess we'll see in 5 and a half hours. Sure, they now have a boss item in them guaranteed, but you're never gonna be at 1 heart with most characters and if you are, you're unlikely to be wanting to take any risks. --- El sexo sucio y el planeta limpio.
