Finally playing through this for the first time and while it's still overall a good it just doesn't feel as good to play as the other Mario platformers.

Mario usually feels like a dream to control and handle. Here it just feels that little bit off. I'm not sure if it's the 30fps or if I've gotten used to platformers being more generous with timing but he just doesn't seem as responsive as usual. Starting out I had many times when I've just seen Mario just not jump when I expected him to. I've had to retrain my brain to jump in the middle of the platform instead of the edge. He is also slippery when he lands. This is really evident in those FLUDDless levels. Nothing about the obstacle courses seem overly challenging but thanks to these two things they feel harder than they should be.

Then there's just the little things that feel like they're flaws I'd find from other companies and not Nintendo. Re-entering the level to get the 10 mission shines just makes these levels feel far more repetitive than they need to be. What's the point of having to run into some random cave in a minute just to get to a FLUDDless level? Games like Banjo-Kazooie long established not needing to do this so why is this still here? Things sometimes feel oddly obtuse. The level where you surf on the squid things was strange. I thought it was just a color choice. But turns out they had different speeds which seems fine but green didn't do fast enough and yellow was too hard to control. Turns out the trick is to push up while surfing on the green one? Nothing in the game communicated this.

For a game with so much water why is it so damn slow? Seems like I should be able to boost myself with FLUDD but it still seems so slow. Why can I sometimes jump onto the lily pads and sometimes I can't?

It's still Mario but just a little off. I'm pretty surprised people often say this one is their favorite honestly.

I love it

but the controls are... interesting

I love the game, but Mario will backflip with the lightest of joystick movements lol

I don't understand why he won't dive unless he's fully running. Same thing with wall jumping.

Just weird hassles that don't need to be there.

The controls are the best once you get used to them. You can do a lot.

it's definitely flawed

wouldn't say because of the physics tho. mario imo controls at his best in sunshine

I dislike the sticky-yet-floaty adjustments in later Mario titles. Sure it keeps you from your own mistakes more often, but it doesn't allow you to do weirder stuff, either.

Yeah; this is where I stand on it. I love how Mario controls in Sunshine

I think Mario Odyssey managed both pretty good didn't it? You could do a lot of stuff with Cappy. Only thing is missing is the dive but it has the long jump to make up for it.

Tbh I think it has better controls than both 64 and Galaxy. Galaxy felt sluggish while Sunshine was more responsive.

I've barely played it, so I couldn't really say. I know I didn't like Cappy killing momentum when you do an air toss, but the game overall looks fun, and the speedrun maneuvers are pretty cool.

Yeah, but in Odyssey it never feels like you're being asked to make the most of the moveset; Sunshine is more demanding of players in a way that I enjoy.

sunshine actually has a ton of really great quick movement tech, but it's all either hard to do or high APM or a bit of a "secret"

If you want the basics of going fast, (spoilered in case you want to find it out yourself, I dunno) try spraying water on the ground and then diving onto it (run and press B or press B midair) while it's still wet

It was rushed from what heard. There's only 7 levels when there was supposed to be more. Blue coins are just awkwardly added to pad out an extra 20-ish shines to make it 120 like 64

Oh to be clear I mean when I'm stuck swimming in the water. Should have worded that better.

oh, yeah, the swimming feels pretty bad. surface somewhat but it's especially bad underwater (there's an underwater red coins mission in one of the levels that really really sucks)

fortunately the game doesn't really make you swim that much, even for a water themed game

agree. Growing up mastering Mario 64's controls sunshine's were really nice. Tight and responsive. Not annoyingly floaty like galaxy. the camera is GARBAGE though I was fighting it 10 times as often as mario 64.

I like the game but it needed more levels, less blue coins, a better final stage and a MUCH better final boss. So embarrassing....
