TopicSuper Mario Sunshine doesn't seem to be as polished as other Mario platformers

Finally playing through this for the first time and while it's still overall a good it just doesn't feel as good to play as the other Mario platformers.

Mario usually feels like a dream to control and handle. Here it just feels that little bit off. I'm not sure if it's the 30fps or if I've gotten used to platformers being more generous with timing but he just doesn't seem as responsive as usual. Starting out I had many times when I've just seen Mario just not jump when I expected him to. I've had to retrain my brain to jump in the middle of the platform instead of the edge. He is also slippery when he lands. This is really evident in those FLUDDless levels. Nothing about the obstacle courses seem overly challenging but thanks to these two things they feel harder than they should be.

Then there's just the little things that feel like they're flaws I'd find from other companies and not Nintendo. Re-entering the level to get the 10 mission shines just makes these levels feel far more repetitive than they need to be. What's the point of having to run into some random cave in a minute just to get to a FLUDDless level? Games like Banjo-Kazooie long established not needing to do this so why is this still here? Things sometimes feel oddly obtuse. The level where you surf on the squid things was strange. I thought it was just a color choice. But turns out they had different speeds which seems fine but green didn't do fast enough and yellow was too hard to control. Turns out the trick is to push up while surfing on the green one? Nothing in the game communicated this.

For a game with so much water why is it so damn slow? Seems like I should be able to boost myself with FLUDD but it still seems so slow. Why can I sometimes jump onto the lily pads and sometimes I can't?

It's still Mario but just a little off. I'm pretty surprised people often say this one is their favorite honestly.
