My friend who's Pakistani told me there are hundreds of languages in India besides Urdu and Hindi if that's the case how do people communicate when traveling?

Hindi is a lingua franca. Most can speak it or deduce enough from cognates that they can communicate enough.

Hindi and Urdu are the languages you learn in school and a large number of the population speaks one of the two

if there's any takeaway from countries in africa, speakers of different indigenous languages tend to use more international languages as an intermediate medium for communication beyond the scope of their immediate cultural contexts or communities
