New (to you) or old.

Do find yourself most often going back to your comfort media, or do you prefer to try new experiences as often as possible?

For the longest time I was stuck in a rut of

Rewatching: The Office, Yu Yu Hakusho, The Simpsons, Hunter X Hunter

Ive finally begun to watch stuff that is new to me, more frequently. It was definitely an obstacle to overcome though.

With video games, Ive generally been pretty good at moving on to my next game, although Im in one hell of an addictive loop with Hades right now.

New is always preferred. It's hard to get good recommendations, though

New, but it's not by an extreme margin. I do a fairly good bit of replaying and rewatching.

Movies and TV: Always new. I almost never rewatch. Feels like a waste of time since you already know what happens. Why not discover new stuff?
Video Games: Mostly old, but that's because I primarily play multiplayer games, which means each experience is a new experience.
Music: Mix. Old creates comfort. New defines eras of your life. Doing a balance allows you to create memories and relive memories. Unlike Movies/TV, music is a background activity, so you aren't wasting time whether it's new or old.

It's kind of a mix, really. I might favor old because I've got some dependable music that will help adjust my mood, but I'll watch new things, play new games, and so on.

mostly new but not necessarily inventive new stuff

like all the manga i'm reading is the same genre of isekai, but i've read a couple hundred different ones

i tend to seek out games that draw heavy inspiration from other games i've played (factorio -> satisfactory -> mindustry -> dyson sphere program)

I think the pandemic has driven me to mostly watch old stuff. Aside from Wandavision I dunno what the last new tv show I watched was

Games have been a bit more split, but probably trending towards old stuff more than usual.

Mostly new. I replay games for achievements really, that's about it. Music is also a mix of stuff I know and stuff I haven't heard before.

i obsessively avoid re-listening to the same albums/soundtracks and almost constantly am listening to something new. It's to the point i have to actively force myself to relisten to things i've heard before---i neglect even some of my favorite albums. Tracks i love i rank at the top of all music ever: i've often only heard like twice.

This is mostly out of compulsion to discover something new and knowing how much there is out there I'll love, artists I love have dozens of albums i've never heard, i'm too curious to find out what those sound like to have time to relisten to old favorites. i keep a huge list of new music to listen to and until it's empty (it never is) the stuff i'm going to put on is 99% of the time something i've never heard before.

very rare that i will want to replay games, but i love watching others play games i've already beaten. the reason for this is pretty much the same reason for with music. there's just too many games i know will be to my tastes that i've never played, and i feel guilty for not having played them yet. i'm getting into speedrunning to an extent though, and that's changing things a bit here.

movies and tv shows i'll watch the same ones over and over again though. probably the one thing i'm like that with. partially because my taste in that category is far less broad than with music and games. i also think the experience of them tends to be less repetitive and more long-form so it requires more repetition to grasp everything in the medium for me? watching a movie once feels like you accidentally speedrun a video game on your first try and miss every detail

I think if my music taste was less broad (ie i didn't have like 500 "one of my favorite composers" where i've still only heard 10% of their work) and if games took less long to play, i would be more inclined to repeat experiences. but as it is i feel guilty when i revisit old favorites rather than seek potential new favorites

I usually feel like I can't devote full attention to shows so I end up rewatching stuff in the background a lot more than watching anything new.

I don't usually feel like looking for new media so most of the time I just stick with old favorites unless I get recommended something. I'll try out a new game if I see one that seems good but that hasn't been happening too often lately.

Kind of a mix, I try to consume new material as often as possible, but I can't resist a good reason to revisit a personal favorite.

Video games: New (to me at least!). I have a large backlog so I don't get a lot of replays done. Multiplayer games are 50/50

Music: mostly old, but occasionally a new song enters my rotation

TV shows: mostly old. I don't watch much TV, so I usually stick with the tried and true like Friends, HIMYM or Full House for the tenth time instead of trying to start a new series that I probably won't finish

Movies: New. I also don't watch a lot of movies, and I could probably count on 1 hand the number of movies I've seen more than once

video games: outside of league of legends which i've been playing for 8 years, everything else in the past year is basically new ( Mario 3D allstars the lone exception)

everything else is almost exclusively new, except for one rewatch of Frasier I did last year. I've been itching to reread One Piece and rewatch Hunter x Hunter at some point this year though, so that will probably be the only old media I consume this year

That is... a really tough call.

Most of the media I consume tends to be older: games released a decade ago, Turner Classic Movies, I don't listen to much music, and if I'm sitting down to watch something new to me it's usually something I skipped over in the past.

But I also think I've been a lot less stuck than I'd be in the past. I rarely replay or rewatch anything these days, though this definitely counts towards music I'm familiar with which can get looped.

I don't know.
