i mean, the laptop i got it front was missing a battery and well, the other half of the computer. it was in a of other broken laptops

i asked my boss what to do with them and he said just take the screens out in case we need them (we usually wont), and just call the ewaste people to get them.

Depends on what type of place he works at. Big corporations usually have policies against taking workplace hardware home or even apart in the first place for various reason (intellectual property, privacy, and just general policies to prevent loss of equipment) but small businesses generally have relaxed rules.

In high school I worked at my Mom's law firm helping their IT guy and he would just buy new computers whenever stuff broke and he would let me scavenge anything from the old ones except the hard drives.

256gb. Thinking of putting my os on there but I already have it on a normal sata ssd and I don't think the experience will be any different and wont be worth the hassle

I did that once but turns out my boss was wrong and the owner was literally sprinting (it was weird and unnecessary) up and down the shop looking for the part i "took to the e waste people" (me)
