All joking by you aside it's legit upsetting that they showed such disrespect for chinese dragons, hell even Mushu shows more respect for chinese dragon representation than this unicorned barbie creation monstrosity.

To be honest, when I saw the whole "Super thief baby" sequence in the trailer I immediately lost all interest in the film. Like, c'mon now. I don't need another entry into the fabled "Movies about exceptional babies" genre. It's already stuffed with such hits as:

Boss Baby
Baby Geniuses
Baby Geniuses 2
Baby's Day Out
Hell Baby

And now, Raya! Wow!

The movie would be immediately better if the dragon was replaced by an animated Ultimo Dragon.

It's not a chinese dragon, it's a naga https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N%C4%81ga

or really a "Nagi", "Nagin", or "Nagini" which are the names for females ones.

AFAIK they are different from Chinese dragons, which are meant to be about power and fortune. These are more about good will.

No, I'm right:

Awkwafinas voice in the film, Sisu, was inspired by Southeast Asian Naga, a water-related snake-like creature. Aesthetic choices are also subtly ingrained in symbolism.
The difference between an eastern or Chinese dragon and Naga is that Chinese dragons are based on luck and power, explains screenwriter Kui Nguyen. And Naga, because its water, its life and hope. Its just a small difference. I dont want a dragon to come to empower Raya to attacks more people. I wanted something that would inspire her to open her heart and trust.

"The Naga are protectors of the water realm. Whenever we go to temples or anything that relates to water, you're going to see symbols of the Naga as a protector," Lao visual anthropologist Steve Arounsack, who worked as a consultant on the film, explained to THR.

Sisu is meant to reference the Naga, a snakelike guardian from Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. The Naga is said to inhabit the Mekong River, a nearly 3,000-mile-long waterway flowing through Southeast Asia.

It's not a generic asian dragon or a chinese dragon

It's a Filipino dragon called bakunawa, not a fucking Naga.
which is a coincidence that Tagalog and Bahasa word for Dragon is Naga.

If you read the words on the wikipedia page, it explains that transforming from a full serpent-like form to either a half-human or full human form is a common trait Nagas are given in Southeast Asian lore.

It is a vague fusion of various Naga from a bunch of different cultures though, with legs added on (which are absent in most of those cultures) to make it more dragon-like and palatable for Western audiences who don't have any frame of reference for legless dragons.

Also, yes, the movie was good. Thought I'd get tired of Awkwafina's because of how recognizable it was, but it worked. Just wish it had been a bit longer, as it did feel rather rushed throughout.

Hinduism/Buddhism is just as invasive in East/South East Asia as Christianity was in Europe. Many distinct cultures/religions had parts merged with it over time.

India is consider asian, but it's more categorized as "South Asia", though some islands that India controls can be considered South East Asia. With that said, Naga lore is a mix of different mythology's, mostly stemming from Hinduism and Buddism.
