Not since the Dreamcast have I been so pleased with a console design. It's also fast as hell and the quick resume is a godsend. Playing all the Halo games at 120fps is a joy, and landing those crisp headshots is so satisfying.

Tbh yeah I'd love it as a secondary little system. It's so tiny compared to the monoliths of the PS5 and Series X.

I'll probably bite if it gets cheaper or gets a disc drive.

You can get a HDD for cold storage and it also runs older gen games from it.

I was thinking about getting my wife one, but I'm kind of worried about whether or not it is a significant improvement over the One X she plays on now.

Specifically, loading times and shit. She doesn't really care about resolution or fps, but she's always bitching about loading screens.

Also, how do I get her physical games into the internal drive? If she can't use disks how does the system verify her ownership or whatnot?

Its got the same velocity architecture as the Series X and same CPU as well, it's fast fast fast. Shell be happy.

About the disks there's nothing to be done. :(

There's almost 400 games in GamePass tho

Gotta manage to find a Series S though.

Maybe they shouldve went with a PS4 digital model and just made it without the disc drive for $399; Im a little worried about the performance differences for future games, especially when devs are already a little concerned now

The Series S still has a good CPU and everything the only difference is that it doesn't output at 4k. I don't think it'll be that big of an issue.

Certainly won't be as big of an issue as programming for the huge variety in PC setups at least.

it's actually insane to realize and put in perspective by thinking about the memories. life itself will soon be indistinguishable from a virtual reality. :)

hope you enjoy your new console man! i love breaking in the new fresh controllers and making sure they feel real good when it's time to pwn some noobs in cod.

Nah. Lots of people are happy with 1080p/1440p. 4K textures are the real ram hog. CPU and everything else is prime quality. This also puts them in prime position to slash it to $199 and kick Sony in the gonads.

Thanks dude! I know exactly what you mean. The advancements have been mind-boggling to say the least. These kids worried about needing 4K to enjoy a game don't know what they are saying, I'm from the generation that was molded by 240p Zelda games at 20fps. Please dudes

They hit around $200 with the all digital One S so thatll be interesting to see happen

I think 4K is a great advancement but 120hz is a bit of a meme at this point. Its not as big of a jump from 30FPS to 60 FPS IMO

I briefly had a Series S at my house, and I thought it was absolutely awful. I don't know why anyone would choose it over a series x, even factoring in the price difference. The storage limitation, combined with being only digital, is just too much.

None of what you said will happen. It scales perfectly well to lower resolutions and upscales accordingly (it actually has a better CPU than PS5), plus you can hook up any HDD for cold storage or playing past gen games (which are constantly getting updated for better performance). The extra GPU power in PS5 and Series X is being used for higher resolution and little else (perhaps a few extra effects here or there)

The original Xbox One had a better CPU than the PS4. Guess which console consistently got better versions of multiplatform games?

To be frank, games towards the end of this last generation were almost unplayable on the original Xbox One. It's not just about resolution, the fact is the Xbox One (not S or X) was by a huge margin the worst console to own.

Based on what developers are saying, and based on the performance of last generation titles through backwards compatibility, the CPUs in both current gen consoles are practically overkill for most games.

To me, it's extremely telling that Microsoft has made literally zero effort on updating anything to specifically take advantage of the Series S. Forza Horizon 4 is pretty much the only game from last generation that got a meaningful boost (albeit only if you compare it to base Xbox One and not One X)

Frankly, I think Series S is a terrible deal at $299. With only 300 GB of usable storage and digital-only, it begs for a storage upgrade - which is $220. And for $100 more, the digital PS5 offers double the storage and 4x the GPU muscle.

Btw, my Series S has 2.3 terabytes of storage right now. I just hooked up an extra HDD I had lying around and presto. How can you expand ps5 storage again?

That's right, you can't. And once the SSD dies, it takes the whole system out with it. With both Series consoles you can still use the external SSD to keep on trucking because they share the same inner architecture. Every ps5 is a ticking time bomb.

I'm not exactly sure what your point is. Both the Series X/S and PS5 support storage expansions. The only difference is that the Xbox's is proprietary.

And the way you're implying that any old external drive can be used for Series S / X games is flat-out wrong. It's the same on Xbox and PlayStation - you can play last-gen games on any drive you want, but you can only play current-gen titles on either the internal drive or the new expandable storage options.

The literal only difference between the two when it comes to older external drives is that you can't store PS5 games on external drives, but you can store PS4 games on them. That said, you can store Series X/S games on those drives, but you can't play them, so it's not exactly a major improvement.

It's much better than Sony's design, you can cold storage games on external HDD/SSD and transfer them in a few minutes.

And again, you ignored how hot they run. We have seen those horrible SSD thermals. PS5 gonna be dying like crazy. There's already talk about an update that will increase the fan speed to help mitigate the flames

Not to mention that the system is also massive in comparison to the Series X while also being less powerful and having a smaller SSD. Where was that typical high-end Sony engineering at?

I think the Series X is by far the best-designed system of the next-gen consoles. That said, I spent weeks with the Series S and basically every facet of it was disappointing compared to my PS5. Conversely, my time with the Series X has been fantastic. Even on a 1080p TV, it simply is worth the extra $200 over the S. If I ever decide to get an Xbox, I wouldn't even consider the S.
