Wait a second before you call me crazy.

Putin takes Eurovision very seriously, like he does with all international competitions which Russia can win. The Russian Government usually handpick an artist who is really famous in the entire former Soviet bloc and hire acclaimed Western songwriters/producers to make the song.

The deadline to present your entry for Eurovision 2021 is next week and last week Russia suddenly announced that they are holding a national selection on March 8th (today). The selection has now aired and 3 really bad acts took part. Which is so unlike Russia.

This makes me believe that Russia suddenly doesnt want to win. The winner hosts the next Eurovision. It has leaked that the Russian Government is suppressing their actual number of dead and infected from covid. And the international sanctions are taking a heavy toll. So they are probably in really poor shape and cannot afford to host.

I hear a decent amount of foreign policy analysts saying stuff like this.

The Russian economy is in the shitter, most of the military is using gear that's decades out of date, their GDP is about the same as Italy, and for all the talk about how Putin runs a tight ship or w.e. the government is pretty damn inefficient

It's why the country is obsessed with putting on these big performances and shows of strength
