I was let go from my job last month and I've been applying for jobs and had several interviews.

One I actually am getting into the process of getting an offer and it's pretty decent and not a contract position.

But I lied to them and said I was still working at my previous job. I was making a lot of errors partily because my dad's terminal illness, and taking care of him really affected me. I feel so awful and don't know what to do . I could get in this job, but they could call my previous job after and just fire me.

I do have an interview for another job next week and they sent an email form asking for my work history. I just can't do it anymore. i just want to tell the recruiter to cancel the interview

what would you guys do in my position? Moving forward I will tell the truth. I did tell one recruiter the truth early on, but while he was sympathetic and tried to get me in those positions, those positions were filled after, and I'm assuming they didn't want to take me.

Don't beat yourself up, first of all. You made the best decision you could have by lying. They likely won't call your bluff.

Don't damn yourself based on what you do not and cannot know. This will only manifest a bad outcome and stress you out at the very least.

Things are tough but at least you have other interviews on the horizon if these don't fully pan out for you. You sound very desperate to work but don't let that desperation destroy your chances of portraying yourself as a qualified candidate.

Seems though. Perhaps fake it until you make it. If you get the job just make sure to do your best to prove that you are worth keeping in the company to make up for your lie. Hopefully they will never find out.

I'm gonna cancel the other interview on Tuesday and tell the recruiter I found a job. I can't tell the recuriter and the company the truth that I lied. I think this will be easier.

I actually know someone who worked for security and he lied about getting fired in an interview. After they got hired for a job, 3 weeks later somehow that place found out and he got fired. Somebody basically told them. they likely contacted his previous job or maybe the recruiter knew someone who worked there.

The thing is that, they could easily call my previous job, after I get hired. My previous job doesn't have to necessarily tell them I got fired, but just the dates I worked there and I'm screwed.

I have friends from a previous job that work in this new job too. I don't want to make them look bad. one of them actually forwarded my resume to the hiring manager. funny thing is that I applied to the job weeks before I got fired too

Did you take family leave? I think maybe you did, but you forgot to file the paperwork because you were distraught. You thought you were on family leave and thats why you said you were still employed. I think that might be what happened.

ETA: Going forward just explain the circumstances. You had to leave your job to care for family. Dont worry about those earlier positions. You have no idea what they were filled. Dont make assumptions.

nicely ask your old boss for a reference, hopefully he understands you had a family crisis that intefered with your work - or spell that out for him gently.
try asking an older boss or ask a current colleague for references
don't lie about these things anymore but explain to potential employers about extenuating circumstances, like the illness affecting your performance at the time. Transparency goes a long way

Yeah, if they cant be understanding then its probably not somewhere youd want to work anyway. I flaked hard on a potential job opportunity once because I had a family tragedy and just kind of spiraled for a while. I ended up going back to them later, explained what happened, and they were totally understanding and sympathetic and hired me.

It's 2021 my dude, the majority of interviewees lie on their resume and during the interview. With the cost of college these days who can blame them

no I didn't take family leave. I did take time off using sick days here and there like once a day every month for the past 5 months to take him to a hospital. They seemed understanding at the time. They let me go for performance reasons.

definitely not doing this. even in the future. my boss didn't like me. The job that I am expecting an offer next week thinks I still work there, so it makes no sense to use them as a reference.
I do have references to give from previous jobs, when they ask for it eventually.

My mom is already a full-time care taker, so I'm not sure how I would qualify. but I will soon. I was halfway through it on the week I was let go. I was hoping I would get a job fast and not need it, and I know unemployment takes time to process. but if the offer doesn't go through I will apply right away.

I'll never know if me taking time off to take care of my dad affected my performance. They wouldn't outright say they me taking days off is what contributed to letting me go for obvious reasons. But I did make some mistakes here and there, and feel like my boss straight up didn't like me and complained about the most trivial things. he also sent passive aggressive emails, and half of them were so awkward, I didn't know how I could reply to.

lying about certain things can bite you in the ass. I don't lie about my skills, which a lot of people may do as a white lie. But lying about the reason you don't work for a company anymore or saying you still work there is bad. I did say earlier I know someone who got fired 3 weeks after they started. Not sure if they said they still work there or they lied about why they left, but they found out. I'm just afraid of getting the job and getting fired weeks after. There are people I know in that company I'm about to get an offer, including someone who is a manager. Not in my dept, but managers talk and it could ruin my reputation.

I appreciate all the advice. I know I am overthinking, but weighing the options of what to do. I want a job asap and motivated more than ever to be an excellent worker, but I'm afraid of fucking my reputation too
