Skyrim is an all time legendary game imo. GTA V is also great, but I actually greatly prefer GTA IV.

Skyrim was my introduction to TES series, and the only one I had really played prior to GTAV.

When GTAV released, I enjoyed the hell out of it. But I found it so underwhelming and kept thinking back to Skyrim. I had played a game where I could walk in every building, pick up every item (all of which either had uses or could be sold), and fight/initiate dialogue with any NPC in the game. Almost all NPCs had names and unique dialogue. It was everything I had ever wanted GTA to be.

Then to add to it, I thought it was cool to play a game where the story was told seamlessly through my interactions with the people and world, without cutscenes. Also I was in a world where I could use magic and there were dragons. It was all pretty badass.

And the thing that made me dedicate thousands of hours of my life to Skyrim was the character customization. I had never experienced such character customization before, in regards to abilities and physical appearance. I ran through the opening quests of the game dozens of times to try out new characters. I never even beat the main quest, and never really had a desire to. To me the game was about playing with different types of characters.

I had never experienced anything like Skyrim at the time. And still haven't -- except for Morrowind, which is now easily a contender for my favorite game of all time.

my problem with skyrim, and i guess the elder scrolls games in general, is that the characters and stories suck and it kind of brings down the experience. i dont think i could name a single (non-meme) elder scrolls character.

meanwhile gtav is one of my favorite games ever made, so that gets my vote
