The Alcubierre drive conforms to Einsteins theory of general relativity to achieve superluminal travel. By a purely local expansion of spacetime behind the spaceship and an opposite contraction in front of it, Alcubierre wrote in his papers abstract, motion faster than the speed of light as seen by observers outside the disturbed region is possible.

...well maybe theyll put it in laymens terms...

Essentially, an Alcubierre drive would expend a tremendous amount of energylikely more than whats available within the universeto contract and twist space-time in front of it and create a bubble. Inside that bubble would be an inertial reference frame where explorers would feel no proper acceleration. The rules of physics would still apply within the bubble, but the ship would be localized outside of space.

If it would use more energy than what's available in the universe, is it really possible?

^ idk, maybe if we were to become a type 4 or type 5 civilization, or something like that, but we're currently not at type 1 yet.

That's not a warp drive. That's Hubert Farnsworth's dark-matter engine.

So they just figured out that it doesn't break any rules, not that it's actually possible.

Yes? My takeaway is they've figured out the mechanics, it's now a matter of finding a viable energy source

I thought they had known this for years. I remember talking about it in high school a decade ago. With tech like this, distance is irrelevant and we can surpass the speed of light.

Multiverse theory.

We suck all the energy out of some random universe and give it early heat death because Zipplebork Greezekot wanted to swing by Alpha Centauri for some space McDonald's.

They did. I read the same thing a decade ago as well. Obviously it's going to take some time to get out of the hypothetical phase

Wouldn't it be early cold death?

Clickbait title;

Of course, theres one gigantic caveat here: The concept in this paper is still in the far future zone of possibility, made of ideas that scientists still dont know how to construct in any sense.

"While the mass requirements needed for such modifications are still enormous at present, the APL scientists write, our work suggests a method of constructing such objects based on fully understood laws of physics.

But while a physical drive may not be a reality today, tomorrow, or even a century from nowlets hope its not that longwith this exciting new model, warp speed travel is now a lot more likely in a much shorter timespan than we previously thought."

Oh man it only needs more energy than exists in the entire universe? Good thing I keep a bunch of universes in storage, I can probably sell them however many they need.

mathematically possible =/= practically possible. it's like big boy version of "andy has 900 apples and he wants to share it with his 5 friends"

unles andy is an apple farmer, which he isn't because he's fucking 7 years old he wouldn't have that much apple to begin with. theoritically it's possible but not possible pratically.
