It needs the Stardew Quality of life improvements or I'm never going back, I'll just play the original, I preferred it in every way to the new ones.

I watched the trailer. It sort-of sounds like they are trying to rip off Story of Seasons: Trio of Towns but I don't know

But yea, I have never played any of the post split Harvest Moons but I heard they are bad

I've played many of the Harvest Moon games even if most of them are kind of samey.

I think HM64 is my favorite or one of the Gamecube ones.

Its called Harvest Moon One World

The reason you didn't hear about it is modern Harvest Moon gamed don't get much hype. The original devs left to a new company and now make Story of Seasons. Those are still good. The modern ones with the Harvest Moon name tend to suck because they are now being made by other people who aren't as good

Tag. Haven't played any of the Natsume ones but with POOT looking so mediocre, I've been eyeballing One World out of desperation.

The people making them never changed, the company localizing them into English did and Natsume kept the old English title.

So far I'm on day 5 (~50 minutes into the game) and I'll tell you my impressions so far.

Pros:
  • You no longer have to waste time switching between tools because the game does it for you when you are in front of a certain tile. This may have actually been a feature in the last game, but I don't exactly remember.
  • In the last Story of Seasons game, I remember getting annoyed because cows would bunch up in front of each other. While I don't have any barnyard pets just yet, the barn for the pets is huge so I don't see how this could be a problem.
  • Your mom is in the game and it seems like you can regularly visit her, which is cool.
  • The map is huge! And you can travel around different lands / take your barn & home with you along the way.
Cons:
  • Similar to A Wonderful Life, planting seeds is done one-by-one, rather than ~9 at a time. I'm hoping this changes when I advance farther into the game.
  • At 6PM you automatically go down to 1 stamina heart and "become tired". Again, hoping this changes, because in these types of games I always find myself working super late.

Meh. I still enjoy them. I play these games for the farming & to raise the animals. The only version I didn't like was Island of Happiness. Fuck that game.

Haven't been really into the series since Friends of Mineral town. Tried a few DS games but couldn't get into it. Have the story of seasons FoMT remake in my steam library.

I think Rune Factory spoiled me.

What's story of seasons then?

In Japan the series is called "Bokuj Monogatari", which translates to "Farm Story". When Natsume licensed the first games for an English release, they decided "Farm Story" was a dumb name so they renamed it to "Harvest Moon", because they are the ones who created the name "Harvest Moon" it's there intellectual property even if the original games aren't. From the release of "Harvest Moon" for the SNES back in 1997, until the release of "Harvest Moon 3D: A New Beginning" it didn't matter as Natsume published the original English version of all the games, and called them all "Harvest Moon".

In 2014 "Bokuj Monogatari: Tsunagaru Shin Tenchi" was released in Japan, it was still called "Bokuj Monogatari" as the same company was making it as all the other games. However when "Bokuj Monogatari: Tsunagaru Shin Tenchi" was released in English it was published by Xseed, since the name "Harvest Moon" was Natsume's IP, Xseed couldn't use it, so they called it "Story of Seasons", Xseed has also published all the other games since in the "Bokuj Monogatari". Natsume, decided not the let their IP go to waste and developed there own "Harvest Moon" games, themselves which are the same kind of game as the "Bokuj Monogatari" series.

Story of Seasons is the /original/ Harvest Moon franchise (called Bokuj Monogatari in Japanese) made by Marvelous. Allow me to explain, all the way from Harvest Moon (1996, SNES) up until Harvest Moon 3D: A New Beginning (2012, 3DS) they used that name for the English localisation and Natsume was the publisher in charge of the English localisation.

Marvelous has its own American division now, called Xseed Games, but Natsume kept the rights of the "Harvest Moon" name. This is why newer titles (and remakes) of the Bokuj Monogatari franchise are called Story of Seasons, while Natsume now makes their own games, unrelated to the Bokuj Monogatari franchise, called Harvest Moon.

tl;dr the original people who used to make the Harvest Moon games didn't go anywhere, they just now release the games under the Story of Seasons name in the west.

This is the first time I've heard of someone not liking what Pioneers of Olive Town has shown so far, what don't you like about it? Personally I'm hyped lol.

Thanks for your thoughts. it sounds interesting so far, and I don't really mind the seed thing, but that 6pm thing is a KILLER. That's so early!!

It came out in Japan and the fans there review bombed it and ransacked the team on social media so hard the producer deleted any photos of the game he had on his Twitter and his role in the game from his bio (note, I find this sort of thing shitty. Please don't do this to people, you guys). They've since put out a statement promising to work on updates to the game that'll fix a lot of the issues.

  • Numerous amounts of bugs, lag (even in menus), and long loading times
  • Really bland dialogue, though with XSEED handling the localization that probably won't apply to us
  • No character portraits. Which isn't a problem in itself, but with the camera angles when you talk to people, you hardly ever see their face
  • Removal of iconic festivals (Cooking, harvest, livestock contests) and many others just have a cutscene attached instead of gameplay, like with the egg hunt
  • Tools are clunky to use
Among other things that are minor on their own but just add to each other. You auto-shave animals when you pet them, small inventory, makers are a pain in the ass, you have to water grass, cooking takes 30 minutes, the spawn rate for rocks, branches, etc. is too fast.

Overall the game still looks fun but not a day one buy, Trio of Towns competitor most of us were expecting it to be. The old producer is currently working on Rune Factory 5 and people think that's where most of attention and resources went, but who knows.

The only thing I was complaining about since the game was announced (granted I just watched the trailers, nothing else) was the characters portraits, no idea why they chose not to include them. But dang, everything else is really unfortunate. I was really looking forward to it (been playing the FoMT remake in the meantime.) Hopefully they'll fix most of the problems at some point.

I've had really bad experiences with the Natsume games in the past but maybe I'll give One World a try if you guys do so as well.
