If you're the plaintiff trying to sue, In most cases it seems pointless because, sure you might win the lawsuit, but lawyer fees will get in the way of your earnings and you will probably break even, best case scenario. Why sue if you're going to be paying a shit ton of money back to your lawyer?

If you're the defendant and being accused of a crime, then sure, I can see the reason to hire a lawyer. But even then, would you rather pay $50,000 or do a year in jail? If you're facing murder charges, then yeah by all means hire you're a lawyer. But seems like doing jail time, unless it's an absurdly high amount of time, is the cheaper option than hiring a lawyer.

What do you guys think?

Yea no shit. Doesn't mean you'd rather do a year in jail.

That just seems like pride to me. You just want to feel good about "winning"

My view of winning is saving my money

People forget that time is more precious than money. It's sad.

That's why people like TC still go to work when they're 80 even though they're already rich. Dumb.

True. That is easier said than done. Maybe if I were facing a year in jail, I would want to defend myself in court. I have no argument against that

I would gladly give a year of my life away if it meant not blowing a shit ton of money. It would mean a living until you're 79 instead of 80. Not a big deal.

That year in jail is a year of freedom at base, and your life disrupted and a permanent mark on your record.

Other reasons might be punishment of someone who committed a crime rather than letting him go.

This is a very good point, it's definitely worth getting a lawyer if you don't want to affecting your permanent record.

that is another reason why getting a lawyer may not be worth it, because it's a gamble. Imagine paying for a lawyer and losing. Then you're still getting a year in jail and paying out the ass in lawyer fees.

I'm sure there are exceptions, but if you win $50,000 (random number) in a case. It's not really going to be that great of an earning if you have to pay your lawyer $50,000 as well.

If you win a lot more then what the lawyer fees are, then sure it's definitely worth it. But how often does that happen?

And then the other question is, what if you lose. You still have to pay those lawyer fees. So then you're actually owing money.

In my experience, they take out a percentage. Even before that, they'll discuss how much they'll take even before taking your case.

I had a buddy who was facing an easy 4 years for dealing. His 10k retainer on a lawyer got all charges thrown out, and he had enough left over to have his lawyer ensure the drug task force stopped pulling him over and harassing him on the street incessantly as a result of them being pissed at having fucked up his arrest so badly he walked away from it totally clean.

If thats not worth 10 grand in your eyes what is?

People are shit at defending themselves

Exactly.

My buddy woulda been fucked. Even with a less talented lawyer he woilda been fucked.

The only part that confused me is how she got him off entirely on a technicality but the cops were allowed to keep over 6 grand they found in his house.

Edit- iirc she did say she could probly get him his money back but also said it would probly just go entirely in her pocket anyways and just piss the cops off more.

But you're not just "giving it away" in a puff of smoke; you're sitting in a cell, missing out on actual stuff.

Also, everyone in this topic should watch the old 'Twilight Zone' episode, "The Self-Improvement of Salvadore Ross."

Plus you now have a criminal record.

Plus the trauma of whatever happens to you in jail.

Olus the stigma of having done jail time.

Etc etc.
