Oh my god. I do not believe it. This is shocking information. A respiratory virus is spread when people exert themselves and breathe heavy spraying their particles in the air.

Oh but its ok. I half assed spray bottled the bench press. So no Covid here!!

Whats shocking is that for the ones led by an instructor who was Covid positive it was near a 100% infection rate.

Not surprising.

About half the people at the gym I go to wear their mask on but with their nose out. Then there's about a dozen gym bros that walk around trying to pick fights with people who look at them funny who pull their mask down under their chin the moment they're out of sight of the front desk. I talked to the front desk about it but they said the last time they put something out over the intercom they actually got yelled at by said gym bros, and gym management has their mask off half the time anyway so they can't reliably be expected to enforce the rules.

At this point I'm just waiting for the giant class action lawsuit from people who have gotten sick because they aren't even trying to enforce the rules

Its why Im doing home workouts now. It sucks i miss benching and squatting but its not safe and I dont want to infect people I care about.

I'd be pretty surprised if that happened. Lots of business protections from covid spreading

The article does seem to indicate bad mask use could have been part of the reason it spread like that. But that's what sucks. It's hard to enforce good mask use

The outbreak occurred even though classes at the gym were limited to 25 percent of their usual size, with only 10 to 15 people in attendance.

Members were required to wear masks when they entered the gym, at which point they had their temperatures taken and were screened for symptoms. But they were allowed to remove their masks while exercising; those who were infected were more likely to wear masks only infrequently during classes, the researchers found.

Many gyms should probably do much better with their ventilation though

Its just hard because I can see Sonic is trying to be respectful with the mask but Im sure he acknowledges there is some risk with the mask but hes determined its ok for him and his life. Thats fine.

But then assholes shit all over Sonics intention by being maskless and spreading their Covid particles everywhere with 0 care.

Thats why I 100% gave up gyms. Even if I would wear my mask at all times at the gyms I know people would break the rules and I didnt want the risk.

Yeah, I'm aware of the business protections, but this gym chain is so blatantly not even trying to enforce their own rules that I imagine you could make a case from negligence. the fact that the issue has been raised multiple times by members and management has done nothing only builds a stronger case

I hope you're right! It just seems tough, though tbf it's entirely possible that liability protections where you are are less exhaustive than the ones here in Arkansas

Always keep my mask on while in the gym and I try to go when its least populated. Also, wipe down all equipment before and after use and avoid touching your face.

Yeah, I wear my mask that gets washed and I grab a little spray bottle and I wipe everything down and do my best. If I see people wearing a mask improperly at the very least I avoid using equipment right next to them, but I recognize that there's only so much I can do. My extended family has a pretty terrible history of heart disease so it's important for me to get to the gym regularly to stay fit and based on my immediate circle of people I interact with I figured the risk is worth it.

What sucks is that the people who are the most flagrant violators are almost all also members of at least one powerlifting gym near me and they just use this particular gym as their easy lift accessory day workout. So even if they get kicked out or the gym shuts down, they'll all just shuffle over to the other places.

I live in New York, and pretty much every person I see working out has a mask on the entire time. They give a spray bottle to every person that enters the gym, and most people are pretty good with wiping down machines.

They even installed these giant fans that legit look like they would kill you if you got hit by them lol. The control box for them in the wall says the company is literally called "Big Ass Fans" hahaha.

Really? My brother goes to the planet fitness in hicksville and says basically the same as what this random reddit guy says

At my gym, people have basically stopped wearing a mask. I'm in li New York. They just wear it under their chin. And then they huddle in groups together. And guys will even make fun of their friends for wearing a mask and do so until they take it down. It's like 99% men who do this. Meanwhile women who are weight lifting or going hard on a cardio machine wear it correctly the ENTIRE time. Staff will walk right by and see them not wearing a mask and say nothing. I know this gym is a no judgement free zone, but I'm judging lol smh. The gym is easily among the most important places to wear a mask.

I tried going to my gym some time after the lockdown ended. One evening I pulled up, and just looked inside. The place was packed; it's not very large and there were over a dozen people, and NOBODY was wearing a mask.

I turned back around and drove back home. I haven't been to the gym since. It sucks.

To add onto this, almost nobody at the gym I go to has a mask on. Im usually one of three people who has a mask on. You can walk in without a mask on as well despite the door saying please enter the gym wearing a mask. No one will say anything to you. Nobody practices social distancing. Youll still see entire groups of buddies all together within arm distance with no mask on just chatting away.

The people going to the gym are well aware it's a luxury they can do without. They are well aware there is no safe way to be in a gym during an airborne-contagion pandemic. Your post means zip to them

To the guy below me, I'm not trying to convince anyone to not go to the gym. I don't think anyone has a legit reason to, and I do think those doing it are beyond selfish, but any attempts to convince people about anything regarding covid would just be a complete waste of my time and effort. Words don't change minds.

My unsafe things dont put other people in harms way.

Would be like saying I like to drink alcohol and I like to drive. Both are important to me. Obviously an extreme comparison, but you can workout with a mask on. Not fun at all. But its doable.
