Made 87 and change from working 2 jobs, they took 12 and change combined and now I owe like 40 bucks. But I'm getting 93 from the state so I'm up a whopping 50 bucks.

This sucks, my returns used to be 4 digits...

If anything, it's a hell of a lot better than giving the IRS an interest-free loan over the past year.

Nah I'm dead serious lol. Had I not killed myself working 2 jobs 70 hours a week for the most part I could've saved myself hours of exhaustion every week for months, worked more at the job that paid more, and came out ahead financially because of it.

I worked 2 jobs for no goddamn reason. Is what I'm saying. I could've just came in on my day off once a week instead of sacrificing hours there to go to the second job that paid half as much 5 days a week and been better off.

I have been working 50-70+ hours a week since December of 2019. I haven't been working from home or sitting in a damn office.

You should be absolutely delighted if you got that close to hitting $0, I don't understand the problem. you were able to keep your dollars and maximize them if you wanted instead of the government making interest.

I've been working 50-70+ hours since December of 2019. I could've cut that by at least 15 hours a week, every week, for a year and only lost a hundred bucks a week. That means coming in fully rested and non stressed and all that for a year straight. I'm saying the time investment and sacrifices I made to maintain the second job were fucking worthless

Tax return = the paperwork you submit to report your tax situation to the government each year.
Tax refund = the money you get back from the government if it is calculated that too much money was withheld from your paycheck over the course of the year.

Having a big tax refund is not necessarily a good thing. Not... a bad thing, either, but it *is* ultimately your money that you could have already had in your bank account before claiming it the following year. As they say, "interest-free loan to the government"

So you made$100 from working 15 hours? That's your own fault you didn't stop working those hours

Mail them a paper check and poke your ass doing it. Tell them they'll receive it in 9-12 weeks. And if they don't, to call you and it'll be another 9-12 weeks at that point.

You shouldn't be upset. You had more spending power throughout the year then if you had paid too much in taxes.

I'm not upset about the money. I'm upset about the time put into a second job that paid less, sacrificing hours at the primary job that paid more. Had I not had it, I still would have made more and got a bigger return because of it

That's absurd and makes me believe you don't understand how income taxes work.

You didn't make less. If you go into a higher tax bracket you don't pay that much on all of your income only the amount over it.

For example say you normally make 40K. The first 10K you make is taxes at like 12% then the next 30K you make is taxed at 22%.

So this year with an extra job you made 20K more than normal. However the 24% bracket starts at 58K.

10K would be taxed at 12%
48K at 22%
And the remaining 2K would be taxed at 24%.

You still come out ahead because you made 20K more than you would without a job. Just part of that 20K was taxed a little more.

Those aren't the actual brackets used, but that's how tax brackets work.

How many times I got to clarify I'm not talking about the money, I'm talking about the fact that I maintained my second job which paid a third as much by sacrificing hours at my primary job which paid more.

well, why'd you do that?
I quit once I got full time at the primary. First time in 4 years they hired for it. Wasn't expecting the pandemic hours to last as long as they have and I was trying to think long term. As in it wouldn't be worth quitting the second job now that it's difficult just to need it again in a few months when I'd only been there for like 2.

That has nothing to do with taxes at all lmao

If one job is working at a super secret chemical laboratory making $50 an hour and one job is working at Wendy's for $8 an hour and you work more at Wendy's than you do at the chemical laboratory then of course you're going to make less money.
