In current work environments I'd encourage anyone who isn't self-employed to do the bare minimum. Hard work isn't a guarantee of success anymore. It just sets a higher bar for you that won't get you more money or advancement.

Anyone that invested should either start their own business or start working on contract. You make more and have more free time, and hard work will actually be reflected in your earnings.

Why are you complaining about people working hard? Do you not want good service? And, are you in fact sure whoever you're referring to make the absolute minimum wage??

You are not entirely wrong.
Fuck just showing up to work nowadays makes you borderline unfirable.

My wife is working at a toy store part time and they didn't fire someone who flat out didn't show up for work multiple shifts in a 2 week span. They did it later after they no-showed 3 more times the next 2 week span.

Ya well that's asking it.
I had a coworker Ex his name of the schedule the other...after even asking for the day, or part of the day off.

I've pulled shit at work, but that's pretty fucked up.
I'm not sure what even came of it.

But, between people who have concerns with Covid on all levels, there were times I was just about literally the last man standing.

Fast food workers are already doing less than the bare minimum

How else can you explain why someone stating they want no ice in their drink when ordering and then getting ice in their drink when at the drive-thru window

It hasn't even been 5 minutes and they already forgot what you ordered

Because people who order like that are assholes. Like the "fries, no salt, but put salt packages in the bag" people.

Asking for no ice isn't unreasonable. Unless the restaurant is very busy there is no reason to mess that up.

not sure I follow. but, I have never been promoted in my life. I just keep getting better jobs. it almost always pays off more to get a different job than to work for a promotion at the same company, but you might set yourself up for a better job hop if you get promoted first.

Have you seen the automated machines? Drops the cup, fills the ice first, then pours the drink. The drive through cashier puts on the lid on.

Oh well if your restaurant has that machine I understand the inconvenience.

Most I've been to don't have it however.

Starting your own business
Having more free time

Pick one.

Seriously, take pride in your work. Doesnt mean you're expecting a raise or a promotion, but consistantly doing good work builds the habit so when you DO get a good job you're already built for it. Slacking off just because "I don't get paid enough" is just you being lazy.

I'd say taking pride in your work doesn't mean you are lazy, or that being lazy means you don't take pride in what you do. To me, being proud of my work is doing it correctly and efficiently. Being lazy is not going above and beyond. And I have worked a number of minimum wage jobs, and you get lazy real fast. Doing extra work suddenly becomes a regular responsibility, so your workload piles up and you have nothing to show for it.

I agree with this; never give 100% because that becomes your standard and not doing 100% gets you in trouble (I usually only give 70% max so when I do 100% its "Oh damn, that must have been really hard!") But you still shouldnt slack off. Make yourself look busy at all times even if it's just for a good recommendation at the end.

But the rest of this topic reads like "slack off if you're not getting paid gud!"

the minimum wage should be raised, and people who work minimum wage should put effort into their job. it should be like it used to be, where one person working a full time job, even if minimum wage, could support a family, buy a house, cars, and for some comforts/hobbies. but that person should absolutely put the effort into their job to deserve it

Don't think it will ever change. The view of employer/employee has changed too much. It used to be that you work hard for the company, show loyalty, and it paid off. Raises, promotions, and nice pension when you retire. Now, people job hop for better opportunities and the companies love it because they can keep hiring young grads at the same low wages.

Can't blame modern employees for leaving and showing no loyalty because companies don't show loyalty anymore, hardly promote, and the raises aren't as much as the salary of a new job.
