Like, I do some, and then they just keep going. Cant I just "finish" something? Thinking about mainlining the story pretty hard because I like the game/plot and then just doing a sidequest here or there if I feel like it. Are there any that end up being super necessary down the line? Like they give good gear or extra content or something?

And they're all pointless.
It's clearly just padding because there's not much to the game.

I think some old man has a sidequest line that gives you some good weapons, but I don't remember. And there's an optional dungeon where you get a "good" item, but I think it's a post-game thing.

I've decided to just do the main story and maybe do some hunts if I need money or exp. But yeah the side quests definitely feel like filler.

How far are you? Eventually some interesting ones pop up, then they go back to stupid BS. It's really hard to enjoy the game chasing all the sidequests, but some are fun.

You think the amount of side quests in FFXV is large, try Xenoblade Chronicles and it's list of well over 400 side quests. Just like with most side quests in JRPGs though, they're mostly there for quick money/EXP.

---
Wild ARMs is still the best JRPG series in my opinion and we desperately need a new game in the series!

That's JRPG's in a nutshell dude. Probably the only reason I enjoyed Witcher 3, it's one of the few games that puts effort in its side quests.

The old man gives some excellent weapons. There were a few good hunts, but yeah, mainly go here and kill X, or find dog-tags or something.

The whole game is basically side quests for the first half. When the free roaming is reined in and the story becomes a lot more linear, the game becomes a lot better, in my opinion.

You do not know the meaning of "filler sidequest" until you do the Instant Noodle sidequest.

Bro, that's an integral part of the story. Don't insult one of the best scenes in the game, please.

Just be thankful you aren't playing Baton Kaitos trying to finish everything. At least FF is doable. The fastest you can 100 percent BK is about 350 hours.

The trails series is an exception to this. Side quests in that game are exquisite. A simple, "go here find this and bring it back" quest in the trails series is always full of tons of party banter and NPC dialogue.

This is why I liked yakuza 0 a lot. There were maybe... 20 side quests in the game? But they were all quality with very distinct, memorable characters and stories. Like it's been four years since I've played that game and I still remember five side quests off the top of my head.

Just got to chapter 7 so I'm doing the gladiolus dlc which is pretty mediocre. I like the insight it gives to his character but the combat somehow got worse.

Definitely gonna mainline the story. I'm ahead of the level requirement by like ten levels anyway so eh.

Level barely even matters in this one anyway. Being level 99 barely feels different from 50

I actually thought they were like the radiant quests in skyrim. There was so much time doing some mundane tasks, then it just ended so abruptly.

The game needs the side quests. The main quest gets thin in the later half of the game.

At least the sidequests in XIV add to the lore of the world and showcase how different people in different places in Eorzea live, while also giving you a reason to explore more of the map.

FFXV is like...go find some frogs.

Keep in mind you shouldn't do all the DLCs in chronological order with the story. Even though Ignis's takes place in like whatever chapter it is, it also completely spoils the ending since it expects you to know it by then.

Gladio's is fine, though. Don't remember if Prompto's spoils anything. Ardyn's does, though.

I'm fine if a game is "thin" tbh. I don't care how long a game is as long as it's satisfying. Hence me skipping most of the side quests cause it's just filler.

What pissed me off in FFXV is that the side quests were meaningless. They didnt advance the story nor were they interesting stories just on their own. They were all literal fetch quests.

I actually like how they're handled in Xenoblade Chronicles. There's a ton of them, but most of them are completed without having to go back to the quest giver. Got a quest to kill 10 monsters? You get the rewards the moment you land the killing blow on the 10th monster. It makes it really easy to just take every quest you see and just do them as you explore.

I remember thinking 15 had too few sidequests and they were all shit that involved only a few garbage NPCs that travelled from location to location as the story progressed.

The fucking dogtag quest doesn't even make sense on any plane of existence.
