About half of men have had an unwanted or non-consensual sexual experience, research suggests, as a leading charity calls for more attention to be paid to sexual abuse survivors who identify as male.

Mankind UK said many men who had such experiences often felt unable to talk about them and often took decades to tell anyone what had happened to them.

I didnt want to believe that it had happened. I wanted to deny that it had happened, said the playwright Patrick Sandford, who for a quarter of a century told no one about the abuse he suffered as a schoolboy.

Sandford told the Guardian he spent decades fearing being stigmatised if he spoke out. There is this huge thing that if a man admits to having had some kind of sexual victimhood, that is seen as weak.

He said he feared he would be labelled a potential abuser himself because of a myth that persists that many men who were abused as children go on to perpetuate that abuse.

According to the research, carried out for Mankind and seen by the Guardian, 9% of people identifying as men said they had been raped or assaulted by penetration, 14% had been coerced or pressured into sexual activity and 21% had taken part in sexual activity with an adult while under the legal age of consent. This was revealed in a poll of more than 1,000 people carried out by Savanta ComRes on the charitys behalf.

Mankind said referrals had increased by 95% since this time last year. Covid restrictions have meant that people cant access their usual sources of support and are reaching out for help which local services currently dont have the capacity to deliver, the charity said.

The government is consulting on its strategy for dealing with violence against women and girls and Mankind has called for a national sexual crimes strategy that takes a more inclusive approach to meeting the needs of all victims of unwanted sexual experiences, its co-chief executive Lucy Hughes said.

Sandford, whose play Groomed is available to watch on Soho Theatres website, said he felt more attention and provision needed to be given to male survivors of sexual abuse, though he stressed that should not come at the expense of female survivors, who should also be given greater support.

Im not saying its worse for men. Im just saying its different. And its not a competition. These figures are very shocking. But, if those figures were half as big, its still terrible. Any child or man being abused should not happen. And the same is true of women.

Mankind plans to contribute to the governments consultation process and hopes to secure funding to continue its research into the prevalence of sexual violence against males. It set up a website, 1in6.uk, in December 2020 to offer male survivors self-help resources and information, as well as a route to access further support. It encouraged anyone affected by the issue to visit the site.

Savanta ComRes interviewed 1,011 UK male adults aged 18 or older online from 5 to 7 February 2021. It said 1,174 men were asked if they were happy to answer the question, with 163 declining and the rest answering. The data was weighted to be representative of population by age, region and social grade.

Meh it kinda depends. I mean what even is abuse? When I was a kid my older cousin would constantly grab and pinch my gross man boobs until they hurt since I was a chunky kid. Sure I hated it and dreaded being in a room with him, but its no priest molestation.

And we've all been grabbed in the balls/had our nuts squashed, its just unfortunately what male bullying is like

the word 'mostly' appears to be technically correct, but probably not in the ratio we would assume

according to the data mankind UK posted, 40% of perpetrators are female

https://www.1in6.uk/unwanted-sexual-experiences/facts-about-perpetrators-and-victims/

i think we should be focusing on the kinds of attitudes we have as individuals that contribute, not trying to determine where to point fingers

Yeah I was sexually abused by women at a young age and let me tell you..... No one seems to care all that much.

Like especially when you are a male victim by a female perpetrator

Though to be fair, like every single victim of sexual abuse has it pretty bad and playing oppression olympics with it is the bad way to go.

Just try and find ways to get everyone the help that they need

School kids tend to respect the sexual boundaries of girls more than boys. It is more common for a boy to be bullied in a physical way. It is more common for a boy to be sexually harassed "just as a joke".

df does your ignorant post even add to the conversation?

are you implying that because many of the perpetrators are male, it's not as serious of an issue as female victims?
are you implying that because female perps make less of the count they can somehow be justifiably dimissed?
do you have any fuckin idea how much abuse gets dished out on boys by abusive female family members?

explain your damn self

you feel remorse for female victims you best damn be feelin the same for male victims too or you got no business talkin like you give a shit either way

10 years ago, I had sex with a fat girl on casual encounters. She was atleast 300 pounds. Never got a pic from her, she just showed up after chatting and I did it anyways. I feel so ashamed.

I learned a lesson though, and never again would I be so desperate that I would see someone without getting a pic first.

Anyways when I was 9 years old I had a friend who was 11, much stronger than me, and he pressured me into kissing him/dry humping me. We remained friends briefly after that day, but I made it clear I didn't want any of that kind of stuff to ever happen again.

I view it as a very embarrassing story and I've never told anyone in real life. Apparently he went on to be really creepy like that with some of the other people we mutually knew. It's not something that I even view as a traumatic experience and I guess with a lot of the things in my life the thing that always bothered me is my lack of a concern factor/lack of being angry that x thing happened to me.

Aren't experiences like that supposed to be something you think about years later and like, break down over? I always tell people I'm well adjusted because "traumatic" experiences never seem to have a lasting effect on me. I'm not jaded towards the world and I believe in the best of the people to this day and I'm a pleasant person to be around( I don't complain very much, keep up a positive energy pretty much at all times)

Anyone who would have insight on this (even if its just armchair psychology) would be....appreciated/interesting.

I have no idea who you are or why I would be tagged like that. Only thing I can think of where I would be considered a "rape apologist" would be from a topic months ago where a 32 year old women slept with a 14 year old boy (in the UK) and the jury aquit her of charges because it was impossible to discern ill intent.

What I had said is that people don't care because its an older woman with a much younger boy. Our cultures across the world clearly view boys as being capable of handling a man's world from the time they can do any physical labor while the same cultures also view girls as fragile, weak, and "flowers" for as long as possible. (The age of consent laws in Mississippi come to mind).

It is very much a new thing in the past ~15 years that some sects of society have started to protect boy's innocence. Many people from the US come from European descent where we know that for hundreds/thousands of years their societies were set in such a way that:

-Boys were put to work as young as 5, and thus entering their time as a "man".

-Girls worked too, but were more sheltered as "pieces" that could be traded in marriages and then their only expected role was to be a baby factory and mother

It's been thousands of years and the way our lives are lived are relatively unchanged:

-Boys are expected to man up and face the world

-Girls are largely expected to be mothers, caregivers, and have their life basically chosen for them

How does this all play back into today? People don't care about Boys experiencing sexual trauma because their feelings don't matter

People care a lot about what happens to girls because God forbid they're sexually assaulted they're viewed as "dirty/tainted" or "damaged/not valuable".

But even in spite of these general ideas, barely any of the rape kits that are submitted lead to a conviction because people in power are disgusting and wish to protect their world view.
