This argument is stupid as shit since Congress literally voted on the legality of this.

The most disgusting thing yesterday is them giving a standing ovation to the cop that saved their lives while at the same time enabling the person who put their and that cop's lives in danger in the first place to do it again, they really do not give a single fuck, it's all for power, power they think they can control for themselves

The most disgusting thing about it is that they think they have some kind of control over their absolute nutcase constituency, all while their constituency is starting to literally win seats in Congress themselves.

By the time they realize they weren't in control, it'll be too late.

The pure cognitive dissonance needed to be a Republican in Congress is insane.
Not even just congress, nearly all republicans are like that now, a good chunk of them supported the insurrection, think violence is needed to solve problems with the government and that the election was rigged and stolen from them, there is no coming back from this, it's only going to get worse because republicans are going to keep pushing that as well as many many other baseless conspiracies and talking points, who needs policies when you can run on "Fuck the liberals "?

As someone who is technically still registered Republican, all I can say is that either I was delusional for the past two decades, or the GOP I voted for is basically dead. I can't help but think that they've always been heading in this direction, but the rise of social media-fueled misinformation campaigns really turned it up to 11.

Oh absolutely, but most of those people werent put directly in danger by Trump. The fact that the ones who were are still pretending otherwise is even more painful than the ordinary dumbfucks.

The mechanics of government trials require a 2/3rds majority, which means that the people who literally commit the crimes have to essentially vote themselves guilty, otherwise they're immune.

I don't know how we can deal with that if we have a party that has essentially allowed itself to go rogue.

It's simple, we can't, there isn't a possibility in reality of changing things because 1. Democrats will never have a ridiculous level of majority in every piece of government to change things. 2. Even if they did Democrat's are big tent so they don't fall in line as easily as republicans do, see the fighting about the stimulus checks.

I really hope they realize that they have 2 years to try and do everything they can with the majority they have now because there's a very big chance Republicans will crawl their way back into position to obstruct them in mid terms and we'll be back in the Obama years and Biden will pretty much be ruling by executive order, executive orders that will be ignored most of the time because he can't enforce them.

not quite. he's saying "I'll come up with whatever excuses I must to never hold anyone with an R after their name accountable for anything"

because everyone knows that if the parties were reversed that things would be playing out completely differently.

An impeachment is really just a popularity contest. If a sitting president is so unpopular that it would be politicially convenient for his party to detach themselves from him, he'll be impeached and convicted.

I think Bush could've perhaps been convicted if there had been an impeachment in 2008. But right now Trump is too popular for republicans to be willing to risk alienating a large part of their support base

In the end, the facts don't matter at all. It's all about convenience.

For what it's worth, an impeachment trial isn't really a criminal trial.

And Trump has quite a few of those lined up, some of which are felony-level.

Felons can actually run for President, which is kind of strange considering their voting rights.

The Constitution makes it perfectly clear that Presidential criminal misconduct while in office can be prosecuted after the President has left office, which in my view alleviates the otherwise troubling January exception argument raised by the House, McConnell wrote to fellow Republicans.

What even is this argument? The Constitution doesn't say you can't prosecute a President while he's in office and yet!
