Because the precedent of punishing someone after they're out of office is much scarier than the precedent of literally allowing a president to commit insurrection without legal repercussions.

Remember kids, Marco Rubio thinks treason is okay if done in the last couple weeks of your term of office.

Well that's fucking stupid.

Ok Marco, let's play your stupid fucking precedent game: if we don't convict people for crimes once they're out of office, how in the fuck does that not set the precedent of "jut wait until your last couple weeks in office to do the really fucked up shady shit; as long as you're out of office before the trial starts you're golden!"

Republicans, ladies and gentlemen. Why are they still a thing?

wish someone would point blank ask if they were ok with the idea of a president being completely uncountable for his words and actions after he leaves office, maybe point out that the next one might just round-about order his supporters to murder his political adversaries and get a pardon...

because theyre smart enough to make the education systems in their state the equivalent of a third world countrys schooling so they can keep raising kids into being brain dead voters

Yeah, that dude murdered his co-worker, but he left his job before the trial started. Dangerous precedent pushing forward with this case.

has this been brought up during the trial? it seems pretty relevant, but the republicans keep acting like they don't know it.

It was the very first thing Democrats brought up

Republicans ignored it

The GOP created an entire culture of questioning expertise, distrusting objective facts, etc. They never planned on the people they were brainwashing to actually gain seats in government, but here we are, with Marjorie Greene and her ilk. And now they realize they can't win elections without the support of these crazies, even though many of them are legitimately afraid of them.

Joe Biden should commit treason on his last week in office just to test this.

For the record it was using the same logic Republicans are using.

A guy realized he was going to be impeached so he quit, then claimed it was unconstitutional to impeach him after he was no longer in office

2 days after that Jefferson and co said its absolutely constitutional to impeach someone after they leave office, took him to trial and convicted him.

Precedent is game , set and match

Not to mention that Congress voted for it to be constitutional prior to the trial. So even if it wasn't constitutional, it is now until the Supreme Court says otherwise.
