There's still a lot of money in grifting the "I'm a victim of the cancel culture woke mob" circuit. Sadly people like her tend to land on their feet nowadays. Granted it's not Disney money, but I'm sure people like to not only have to not worry about being fired for this kind of thing, but get paid for it. To themselves they are some kind of crusaders and activists for a noble cause, and I can see the appeal of wanting to feel like you make a change in the world, all of it being based on dog shit aside.
