Thats how it was in ffxi and you would take the airship with other people.

You would also see the airship land in the background when you were in the hub world of the cities

Are you talking about the transportation ones? Because that would be a pain in the ass if they were, also you fly on them solo not with other people.

I loved waiting for boats and transportation in EQ1 and even WoW. Time to bond to other people and maybe form a party. Modern MMO's are so instanced and focused on being easy that they are pathetic to play. I miss the days of old MMO's and the actual feeling of "massive" in the MMO genre. Now I go into a dungeon and it's separated from the rest of the world except for me and my group of 3 others. I loved stumbling into a dungeon and seeing a bunch of other people exploring and making it feel like a WORLD.

Oh well. Pantheon Rise of the Fallen has my interest if it ever comes out.

@Kaldrenthebold That does sound kind of cool. I believe Project Gorgon is totally open world like that from what I played, you can see other people in dungeons and stuff. Also you get permanent curses if you get killed by bosses and the only way to remove the curse is to go back and kill the boss.

I remember the first time I traveled from Sandy to Windy in FFXI. It felt like a real journey, with actual danger present along the way. My first time traveling from Gridania to Ul'dah? A 5 second loading screen.

I just started playing in August and had no idea they used to be like that.

I dunno...as often as I go back and forth between places, that sounds more of a hassle than anything. I don't use warp that much due to the payment, but waiting for the next airship would have turned me off of using it and made me use warp more.

Stuff like that are things that I miss as well. Many mmos at this point are essentially just hubs. I kind of miss getting messaged by a no life person to log on and help with a rare spawn or something.

This would be awful you go to the three big cities too often for this to be remotely practical in ffxiv

You forget airships exist well before you get to end game anyway. They don't even go to the later areas.

I'll take a look at it. There are basically two types of MMO games: Sandbox, and Theme Park. WoW and FF14 are theme park: you get a series of quest lines that basically funnel you from hub to hub where you complete the quests, level up, move onto the next encampment / city / base and rinse repeat all the way to the end. Sandbox ones say "just go do stuff in the world" with maybe a main quest to follow and some smaller quests, but the game is played as you wish. Just want to go kill things in an area to level up? Go for it and move onto the next area to grind your way to victory.

My big issue with a lot of Sandbox MMO games these days is they put a TON of focus on PVP stuff. Like having guild wars, groups running towns, lines of factions being fought over across the land and such. I was never a big fan of THAT kind of game, so I am still kind of lost. Vanguard Saga of Heroes was a nice mix of sandbox and theme park. Pantheon is from the original creators of EQ1 so I have some real high hopes for that one.

Yeah it's... not a very lively game but it's got a ton of absurd features to it, like Vocabulary is a skill that you train through a word search minigame. Dying is a skill >_>

It's fun to dork around in, not a very serious game though.
