I played this game so many years ago and got to the end boss and never beat it. I have it on Gamecube and on 3DS, but gonna play my Gamecube version.
I remember there are a bunch of side quests and various NPCs that do things at specific times. How hard is it to catch up with what/when/where with all of these quests without actually reading a guide? I'd rather play without a guide tbh --- http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20111123223446/simpsons/images/9/99/K.png I didn't even give you my coat! ... Copied to Clipboard!

Pretty cryptic at times without a guide.
If you're gonna play, the 3DS version comes with an easier journal to reference so you don't forget things and can set reminders --- The name is wackyteen for a reason. Never doubt. ... Copied to Clipboard!

The gamecube version is the absolute worst version of the game. How so? I wish I had the n64 cart I had growing up, but I lent it to my friend and then that jerk never gave it back I've also heard the 3DS version was not good because of all the changes --- http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20111123223446/simpsons/images/9/99/K.png I didn't even give you my coat! ... 3DS version has a lot of changes, I personally am not a fan of many of them and think it's a worse version of the game but some of them are nice too and I can see why people would like it. the gamecube version is just the n64 version emulated, so it's the same except it's way more laggy in certain places (stone tower is one, also whenever there are explosions) and has very rare but seemingly random crashes sometimes
I think the main story is definitely not an issue guideless. Some of the side quests are complex but if you're willing to go around talking to people, and then actually paying attention to what they say (maybe even writing notes for yourself or something) it's not like there's anything totally unhinted. just that there's a lot to keep track of and it's easy to forget stuff --- THIS IS WHAT I HATE A BOUT EVREY WEBSITE!! How so? The Gamecube can't properly emulate N64 games that need the extended RAM from the expansion pack; as a result, the Gamecube version of Majora's Mask is extremely unstable and prone to spontaneous crashing. In a game where you tend to only save once per two to three hours, this can be devastating. kirbymuncher posted... I think the main story is definitely not an issue guideless. When you need to give Koume the red potion, you have to do so during her dialogue. There is a prompt that comes up that says to press Start to open the menu, assign something to a C button, and use it, or something to that effect. What I didn't realize is that you can (and have to) do this before this text box leaves the screen; I thought it was a tutorial on how to do it once the dialogue was finished (like how it worked in Ocarina of Time). But you can't just hit the red potion button in front of Koume because you'll just drink the potion no matter what. So I spent hours trying to figure out how to position or what I needed to do to just hand over the potion. >_> --- "That is why war is so tragic. If you're playing the GameCube version, just be sure not to do too many quests in one 3-day cycle or the game WILL choose that time to crash and you'll lose all your progress since your last save.
Most of the game is great without a guide though. Just pay attention to what people are doing and saying and you can figure out how to help them or take advantage of them. That's the charm of the game for me. --- I'm sorry, but 10,000 of ANYTHING on a PS2 would absolutely destroy your framerate. It'd be like playing chess through the mail. ~johnboy1 ...
