I got the game in September but I held off till January to play it.

This game is a easy GOTY for me. I loved it so much

The artstyle and lighting alone deserves a award. This game preserves so much and makes it look so much better than 90% of FF15.

Music is done by Uematsu, so its a automatically godlike and a easy 11/10. This game has so many battle /boss themes and they are all AMAZING. Each one is unique and memorable

Combat... I love it and its easily the Squeenix's 2nd best combat system, but there a few things that bring it down kinda quickly, like air combat, lock on/ camera, and bosses ending stagger early to change phases.
Not as fluid as Tales combat, but after playing the demo like 30 times and finally the game, Its great but there's room for improvement

Characters...Love everyone including npcs which is rare. Main cast is excellent and pretty faithful. VA is great but there was like 3 characters whose voices I didnt like.

Story...loved it, but I see why people would be concerned. Theres a few changes I don't agree with, but with some of the added changes to the main game, I'm willing to see how it plays out. Honestly there was one chapter I didn't like and one chapter I liked but thought dragged to much. There's also a lot of 'slow walking' parts of the game, which I don't mind at first, but repeat playthroughs will make it kinda annoying.

I give this a 9/10

Fucking loved it. Definitely the best FF since X.

Beat it. It was ok. Didn't bother going through all the chapters and finishing off the extra stuff after

I just... I didn't like the combat system I'm sorry! I'm not a hater of action'y combat. You mentioned tales games and I love those.

The remake would have been better for me if they kept the battles turn-based and just made the game really pretty or something. Everyone has their own preferences!

I loved it and got the platinum (despite a few annoying trophies). I wasn't feeling the combat at first but it definitely grew on me as I kept playing and I really enjoyed the combos you could do with all of your abilities, particularly Tifa. The soundtrack is top tier easily and I haven't stopped thinking about the music since the game came out. Awesome game overall and I can't wait to see how the rest of the games play out.

The slow-walking parts were like getting my fingernails ripped out. The side-quests were laughable. And the stupid ghosts of Christmas future were lame. But despite all that, I really did love it. Not my GotY, I thought Ori and the Will of the Wisps was the best of 2020, but still a solid entry and I am excited for part 2.

Agreed. I don't have anything bad to say about the game really. The only downside is it'll be years for us to get the full remake. Based on that 9/10 seems reasonable.

I really liked the game. My favorite bit was easily the Jessie mission since that brought a massive amount of humanization to the world (and the biking segment was really fun to boot). I'd say the only thing I disliked was that some of the bosses felt really... cheap and painful... if you didn't have the exact right set-up prior.

Well, the whole point of the 'ghosts' was that they were trying to force the plot to follow that of the original FFVII. With their defeat the cast on both the heroes and villains side is free to pursue their own, different, goals which can have vastly different outcomes than what originally happened. For example we saw Zach survive as well as Biggs (?) with an implication that at least Jessie may have survived as well.

I got lost interest a few hours in and stopped back in August... but I started playing again about a week ago and it's going a bit better. The pacing is still inferior to the original, but it's getting better.

My only major gripes are with the aforementioned story changes and the repetitive nature of some of the side quests. Gameplay was solid and I wished they had more boss type fights. The house fight in particular was a lot of fun for me.

That being said, I'm kinda curious how they're gonna push it through to the next episodes. Seems like you get the majority of the spellbook within the first episode not to mention the levels and what not. Starting Episode 2 with maxed out level spells means no progression. Whereas being taken back to square one when starting the next episode I would find annoying and I know is some kinda gaming trope but in a story that's supposed to be contiguous, its even more egregious.

That said, it was my favorite game of the year though I admittedly skipped quite a few big titles.

I'm waiting until they at least announce Part 2 before I do Hard/ Platinum.

I didn't mind the sidequests, mainly because there was a decent level of world building and there was a small amount of them overall.

They weren't the worst thing ever but doing shit like finding cats and 'Go here and kill (x) enemies' is boring. Some of the sidequests added to the world like the thief quest but more than a few were just mindless garbage. Unfortunately that seems to be the price of a (semi) open world game.

Mercifully they can be skipped outright on subsequent playthroughs and to my knowledge don't impact the game past doing them in the first run.

I was thinking about that. There's some stuff like holy and meteor that weren't in it but like how many more materia can they really do over at least two more games

i think that most people are going to expect their save to transfer to it with all of their shit, but realistically that's probably not going to happen

or rather, i could see it happening for the first bit of the game, but then it all gets stolen by like yuffie or something.

it just wouldn't make a whole lot of sense to just be using firaga throught the entire 2nd part, so they're obviously going to do something to prevent that from happening

That's what I mean. I feel like if they just take it away it's going to feel like a cheap way to induce progression. You can kinda get away with it in stuff like the Metroid series because it's not episodic.

I'm sure they'll start you back from square one but I'm not gonna like it.

Enjoyed the bulk of the game, beat it less than two weeks after getting it at launch (which is a record for me), but I thought the ending was solid Nomura Kingdom Hearts-grade bullshit on a stick.
