It does, but it's not a fair rephrasing. Many people who have student loan debt don't need help, either. This logic leads to means testing forgiveness, which is fine but different than what people seem to want
Doesn't have to lead to means testing. Not only because means testing is expensive, but also because it's perfectly possible to just conclude that predatory lending is immoral and should be abolished. How exactly that abolition should happen, and who gets compensated for damages, isn't relevant to that insight.

Full disclosure, I never intend to pay off my loans. I'm banking entirely on the public service loan forgiveness program. Failing that, I have no real plan. So this isn't about me.
This seems to be the case for those that want loan forgiveness.

Otherwise, you get to be out of your financial obligations (that YOU agreed to), you don't get or deserve anything more than that just because you fulfilled your commitment.

Yeah but plenty of student loan lending isn't predatory...

And opinions on which loans are immoral and which aren't vary :)
Personally I would be inclined to think that any loan you're forced to take to be able to go to school or get healthcare could be seen as immoral

Okay, well shouldn't you want to remunerate people who you think are victims? Does the fact they made it out okay erase the predatory nature of the loan? And if so, wouldn't loans held by others who would be fine without debt relief also not be predatory by the same logic?

Yeah that sounds like a nice idea. And yes, other loans might also be considered immoral.

You get a shiny piece of frame that says you either wasted your life or a ticket to future opportunities. The choice is yours.

fyi, that frame doesnt mean your any better than the plumber that unclog a your toilet.

But morally it seems totally justifiable to want some recompensation for people who paid their loans off already

my loans are paid off and i'm okay with not getting anything

i don't need help

If they're in debt, they need help. If they need help, but are not in debt, then they don't need help...with the debt.

Right, but they might need help with money, which they could have more of it they didn't pay off their debt.

Anything that fucks over salie mae, navient, or the other administrators that have made billions by exploiting 20 year old ignorance is fine for me.

But like you said it's not feasible. I would rather lose the money I've put back into it then have another generation have to put their life on hold for a decade. And whatever concessions or ugly kickbacks for politicians to get something to go after people who did pay probably isn't worth it.
