personally, i think any terms that have origins in porn are incredibly suspect. if you want to use them to describe yourself, i'll roll with it. but they're probably not things you want to make a habit of using to describe other people.

Even if you were right (which you're not), then at best, without the existing use of the term to refer to trans people, which has absolutely happened...

You're still looking at a term meant to diminish cross-dressers as reflections of the people who interact with them AND promote the idea that a man is meant to feel uncomfortable for being attracted to someone of the same gender.

And that's what it boils down to: the idea that a man should recoil at the idea that the person he's attracted to is not the what he thought they were.

This leads. To people. Getting killed.

you're entirely right that gay panic is an insane concept to legally exist in this age and time, but you're talking about a term that's been used by gay people, to refer to gay people, for quite awhile. a guy that is trying to pick up women in a bar and somehow accidentally picks up a crossdresser who is misreading their signals is not going to be the same person who is making jokes about accidentally jerking off to an anime femboy on 4chan.

there are about a million more pressing things to approach and address in term of the larger treatment of crossdressers if you want to talk about that. the word trap is pretty looooow down there on the list though. but i get it, people interact and interface with smaller things because they feel they can change them easier. in this case it's misguided and a lot more complicated than you're letting on, though, is all i'm saying.

read your post and appreciate your comment, especially that it's speaking from experience, but in the circles I frequent it appears the needle's turned on that notion. I don't think this is the same as reclaiming "queer" et al. It just seems like the word's entire foundation is based on demeaning/dehumanizing. Cyric put it nicely, imo

i get what you're saying, and i do openly admit there are certainly people that could be tossing it around negatively. it's a word that came out of early 2000s internet culture in places that have a much higher degree of radicalizing people than others might. but it comes from much more mundane origins, and i still see the majority of people that i interact with using it a lot less maliciously. Maybe more needs to be done to remind the stupider people who are flinging it around in less reputable places where it came from, but I just don't think they're the majority.

The term "Trap" when used to describe crossdressers / trans people is definitely a slur. This includes fictional characters such as anime.

And given how hostile this topic is, as well as drifting into Offensive discussion I'll be locking this.
