Im selling an item for almost $1000. The person on Facebook marketplace insisted she would send me $1000 plus $80 for shipping over Venmo or Cashapp.

Would this concern you? Her Facebook does not give criminal vibes, shes an older lady.

An older person wanting to use venmo instantly throws a red flag for me.

scam alert. they'll send you the money and then days later reverse it, lie to venmo, and venmo will charge you 1000 dollars.

or they dont want to pay any fees that facebook takes.

probably both.

I agree with you guys. So heres my next question. If I gave this person my Venmo, what could she possibly do with it? That was my curiosity. How could she steal my money by simply having my venmo.

The only real threat I saw was that shed have my address after I ship her the item being sold. But is it worth spending $1000 to get someones address to potentially rob them? I dont know.

My only theory is that she wants to avoid the insanely high sales fees when purchasing directly through the app. Theres a 12.9% buying fee plus the shipping. So a $1000 item becomes 1000+12.9%= $1129 + $7shipping = $1136 total. She would save a nice chunk by avoiding Facebook.

OHHHH now THAT is where the scam is. I wasnt aware you could do that! When you venmo someone money, you can later go in and cancel the sent amount?? Thats how she would fuck me over. Man people are scummy..

https://www.redpoints.com/blog/facebook-marketplace-scams-an-overview/

The camera was listed at $1200. The buyer paid Rasa the full amount, but in 52 separate Venmo transactions. Rasa thought it was weird, but since he had all the money, he let the camera go.

A day later, Venmo froze Rasas account and took back all that money. It had violated their terms and was also found to be from stolen cards and accounts. In this situation, Rasa had no recourse with Venmo to get the money back, and lost the camera as well.

Im slightly desperate to sell it because I dont know whens the next time someone will be able to give me $1000 for my camera as well. So I dug into venmo and this is off their website:

It is not possible to cancel a payment to an existing Venmo account. Once you send a payment, the funds are available to the recipient right away. If you need the payment returned, please have the recipient send you a payment for the same amount.

But you just answered my next question. Even if this person sends me a one time payment of $1080, if it was with a stolen a credit card, Im fucked?

That is absolutely, 100% a scam. You should never under any circumstance pay for an item with Cashapp or Venmo. If a person is insistent on those two methods, you should report them immediately.

I simply told her that Im willing to list the camera on an app that accepts shipping, such as Mercari. This way she doesnt have to send money to a stranger.

She opened my message 27 min ago and still hasnt responded. Classic. Crazy thing is her fb looks so legitimate. She has pictures with her husband and grand kids, and the pictures go back to 2013. Her friends are commenting on her photos.. Inagine faking an identity 7 years in the making to scam people online. Nuts.

Not to mention it could be a phishing victim that had their account stolen. But yeah, venmo & cashapp should only ever be used if you never expect to see the money you send through those apps again.

I will never understand why people don't use PayPal Goods and Services exclusively when making these sorts of deals. They protect against scams.

I wouldn't do it, not for business transactions like this.
Venmo/cashapp are more used for outings, gifts, things of that nature.
