Only 30 years ago, Seinfeld was making jokes about asians sleeping in dresser drawers. If it was considering tiny and cramped back then, I can't even imagine what it's like in 2021, super depressing thought

Honestly it's the US that are the weird ones, most stores have huge areas of empty space

This. In most countries I've been to, department stores and restaurants are tiny. They're maximizing space usage to save on costs. The US likes to take the Walmart approach and give the impression of these giant spaces.

Just go to an authentic local Mexican or South American grocery store in your area to see the type of space those countries typically utilize. I remember a Mexican grocery store I went to where I literally had to walk through an aisle sideways in order to fit through and grab a bag of beans.

Mix of them

  1. Being shorter on average then Americans/Europeans
  2. Being an island nation with higher population density
  3. Japanese culture has less of an emphasis on individualism compared to America. Personal space is not as important in certain contexts at least

My somewhat informed guesses.
