Nintendo seems to be abandoning handhelds for console-handheld hybrids, which means Sony can enter the market more freely.

PSP also had only a single (terrible) joystick, the media (umd) was unreliable, disc trays prone to failure. And more.

The vita was killed because of the memory card mostly, but also because of garbage support from devs. It didn't get nearly enough quality games.

Which the PSP did before the Switch was a thing. Not that anyone used it. Sony's big problem is they insist on doing proprietary shit that costs a fortune. The Vita was dead as soon as people saw the price on those memory cards.

With its own different proprietary memory card, software suite, and new points of failure.
It may as well have been a separate system with how different it was.

Yea. Hardware wise it was an amazing console. the proprietary memory card and lack of 3rd party support is what did it in, but i don't understand why dude is acting like both handhelds were bad lol

Because I owned both and they were.
The psp had so many failure points on it, the disc drive in particular being awful, the joystick was trash.
It had way too many proprietary accessories.

The vita had an entirely too small library, even if the hardware was good. Combine a disappointing library with the proprietary (and underproduced/over priced) memory cards.
Then look at how terribly implemented remote play was, which was meant to be a big feature.

I don't personally like playing games on my smartphone, among other things playing too intense a game if I'm not also around a charger somewhere will usually mean my phone isn't lasting to the end of the day. I think there's a market for a smaller game system independent from your phone.

There's also the Vita losing first party support almost immediately after a poor launch. We got... maybe half a dozen first party tier games and then it was just random indie games and waifu-junk from Japan.

that's fine. you don't have to personally like them. you can have your own opinion. But they weren't at all failures and were technologically great handhelds. the fact that you're trying so hard to deny that (going as far as calling the Go a completely different handheld) is weird...

Concept was cool, execution was awful.
Broken slide mechanism aside, going all digital and having a proprietary memory card (which was different from their previous proprietary memory card) meant it was doomed at the start.
Sony also never clued in to the fact that 4 shoulder buttons are superior to 2, even on a handheld.

The core issue with Sony's handhelds is that they never really offered any good portable experiences, instead relying on awkward "AAA", console-ish titles that felt a little too extra to feel at home on a portable, but not good enough to feel at home on a console. They were also too clunky and unintuitive to be solid portable multimedia devices as well. This was made abundantly clear with the relatively poor battery life of the PSP and Vita.

Agreed on the poor execution. Going all digital was a mistake, but only really since it was like 6 years before it really would've gone well. There were just a few too many classics on the PSP you just couldn't play without hacking it.

Although to be fair, they couldn't really slap extra shoulder buttons on the Go, since it was supposed to just be a variant of the PSP. And the OG PSP memory cards at least worked in some other Sony products, since like everything was proprietary in the early 2000s. My camera and PSP shared memory cards.

This is basically it. There is no market for handhelds. Nintendo managed to survive in that market because it was primarily marketed to kids with games like Mario. Even now theyre not really looking to expand on that market anymore because of the switch. There is a crossover with consoles. Handhelds are too niche to be worth the time these days.

Great hardware with terrible support from Sony. Even back to the ps3 days it was a trend for Sony to attempt a new gimmick or new piece of tech only to abandon it and stop supporting it as time went on.

The PSP struggled and I remember the hype around vita which looked like a step in the right direction but the steep price and terrible cross over games killed it.
