I usually put it in sleep. I think shutting down all the time maybe is bad but not sure

Neither, I simply reboot every so often. Otherwise my rig never sleeps.

I put it to sleep if I need to step away for an extended period of time during the day

But I'll always shut it off overnight

I only ever shut down after something gets updated and it needs a restart.

Its up to you. I have an SSD as my start up drive so booting up only takes like 10 seconds so I just shut down.

But there is no correct way, it's just a matter of choice

I shut down every time I'm done. I probably turn it on and off again like ten times a day.

Used to be flaky in Windows XP and Vista days but it's a lot more stable these days. The only reason I'm not a fan is that putting it to sleep or enabling fast boot and shutting down doesn't install updates which is a bit of a pain.

I typically just let my computer sleep after a certain period of idle time. I rarely shut it down.

If I know I'll be back in a couple hours or less, I put mine to sleep. Otherwise, I shut it down.

Was wondering if it's a matter of power saving electricity or if the amount used for both options is negligible difference

If you put the PC to sleep it is quicker to wake up than a full startup.

Sleep dumps your RAM into your SSD and slightly reduces its life.

My PC tower is a $300 machine and I bought it in May 2015. I always put it on sleep unless I go on vacation...
AND I use white noise at night, so it's never really in sleep...still runs fine lol

Shut down is better for the machine itself, but I'm not sure how much better, or if it's worth it to shut down every time.

I just don't turn it off and let it go into sleep mode. It restarts enough on it's own with windows updates. As long as you don't leave like a game or something running alt-tabbed, your power draw will be negligible.

I built my pc 8 years ago and I almost never never shut it off, always sleep mode.

After 8 years the only component I changed is the GPU. Everything else is still working perfectly

Mine is 5 years old and never sleeps or shuts down, still runs like a champ. The occasional reboot is all that's needed unless you care about the extra buck on the electric bill.

I always reboot the computer as I go to bed; it'll go into sleep mode after 30 minutes.
When I wake up, I can start the computer in seconds instead of the several minutes it takes for a normal boot up.

I had an old machine for 8.5 years and never used sleep, ran fine until near the end of that period. However the problem was the psu must have had a leaky/bad capacitor and if the weather outside dropped to 40 degrees F it was cold enough in the house to prevent a boot. I guess it was just as well, as it was running Vista and just 2 months before it was announced "no more glorious Vista". The rest of it was ok, but old, and finding a replacement psu with molex connectors in 2016 was kind of a "why even bother"

As for which one, depends on when the next time you're going to use it. I don't like letting it sleep personally, especially for 2-3 days straight. Also because it presents a grave danger to others in the house, such as my monitor's standby light being amber, so they gotta interrogate me why it's broken.

Adding to this, to those that don't understand what I'm refering. I once had my browser on a blank white tab, because I didn't close/minimize it. It was there for a total of 2 minutes and got questioned like "what's wrong with the computer" "why's it like that" "how much is it gonna cost to fix" "do you need a new one" ... "it's just on a blank page" "a what, why's it blank, is it broken"
