Hate's a strong word but i definitely consider it immersion-shattering. I play games for the escape so if I'm forced to think about tactics (like, say, taking turns in a fight) then I lose the escapism aspect

Which is why "realism" is kind of a pet peeve of mine when it comes to VGs critiques/reviews. If I wanted something real I'd go into the actual real world. Is the game fun to play? That really all it comes down to for me.

I used to not really be into turn-based games (outside of board games and cards), but after playing through some turn-based WRPGs from this past gen, my opinion has changed.

I'm still not a fan of turn-based JRPGs, but I'm trying to give Like a Dragon a chance.

That topic is probably a year old by now, but the sentiment remains.

Look, all of us were young men (teens) and we would invite our male friends over. It wasn't weird if we had a bunch of guys over playing video games or talking about hot girls in our grade. It wasn't weird to invite even just ONE buddy over to play games with. It's because we were young.

But that was when you were teens...maybe even young 20's. But at a certain age, it just stops naturally. OR at least it should.

There can be an element of strategy to it that's fun if done right, just like any other type of game, but I'm not a huge fan. My main complaint is that it just extends the game so much. Some people like that but it turns me off from playing turn based RPGs, they always seem to be some of the longest games of their respective generations. Outside of boss battles it generally feels more like a big inconvenience.

RPGs aren't meant to "simulate real life," they're meant to simulate tabletop board gaming -- which is turn-based. I've never played a game of D&D where we're frantically throwing d20s at rapid pace on the table until we get a crit.
If you want something that "simulates real life," then play GTA or some shit.

My only complaint is they should focus on faster animations cause its already slow by default.

Uh, what? Plenty of tabletop games are turn-based. Including probably the most famous tabletop game of them all, chess.

Yeah realism is like the dumbest complaint lol.

But I do think that simulating tabletop games isn't really a problem that video games need to solve. That doesn't mean they can't, but video games also have ways to represent combat that you can't really do on TT.
