Public healthcare is cool.

College graduates can pay for their own degree which is already insanely profitable.

In the case of free college, I think it needs to be tied to performance standards. If education is investing in your people, it should have a return on investment and we absolutely need to prevent the quality of that education from eroding. Plus college really isn't the best fit for everyone and it would be a disservice to trades to further stigmatize not having a college degree as having failed somehow.

For example, Germany offers free tuition, but a smaller percentage of their population goes relative to even the US. Other countries like Korea have extremely difficult entry tests that determine whether someone gets to go or not. So even in places where it's free or near free, there are barriers in place to make sure it's a good fit.

In addition, if it's just the government footing the bill, we'll end up in the same place as healthcare where universities all charge the maximum amount the government is willing to pay which will increase by the maximum amount allowed every year. It is probably better to address the skyrocketing cost of tuition (and things like textbooks) before deciding that the solution is just for the government to pay it all.

Public healthcare will be trash. So on top of paying for that garbage I'll also be paying for the vastly superior, private healthcare still via my employer.

For college I'm against anything that's not STEM. Anything outside of it is just your personal passion or whatever such rubbish. So if it ends up being for a worthless, dead end career....that's entirely on you.

Neither of these things (especially healthcare) could or would be funded by taxing billionaires.

No you won't. Abolish healthcare as a luxury.

All your health insurance does is pay to be less fucked (after you meet your deductible) when you need medical attention. Fuck employers and fuck insurance companies.

healthcare and college is corrupt and in desperate need of reform, but devil's in the details - politicians are so corrupted by lobbying that things are seldom if ever implemented the way people think they should or will be

also the question of who's in the bargaining seat with respect to pricing - if it's education or healthcare institutions, prices will bloat (as has happened in education already due to direct and indirect subsidies); if it's govt, potential underfunding or misallocation resulting in underhanded cost-cutting practices on the part of health institutions - except it's shouldered onto taxpayers rather than patients

not inherently opposed to single-payer approaches to such though, if it comes with meaningful and constructive reforms esp. addressing factors driving price inflation to begin with

either way, hybrid system a la singapore would be best

Making college free at the point of entry doesn't actually do anything to expand access to education. You're basically just giving a handout to the people already there.

It is very hard explaining this to progressives types who come from comfortable, middle-class households.

I support a public healthcare option. If you dont have private insurance, you get Medicare like insurance with payroll deductions. And a tiny (say 1%) flat payroll tax on everyone.

My problem with free college is I dont think modern universities try to contain costs at all. Get rid of all the administrative staff, the bajillion sports that every student has to pay for, the arenas, etc. get down to $5k and Id say its in the public interest then.

Alternative, Id be interested in subsidizing STEM, medical, teaching.

I dont see it in the publics interest to pay for some kids $200,000 communications degree.

College Education - I don't support this. It doesn't solve the problem which is bloated costs. They need to focus on having colleges justify their cost of education and what they spend their money on. The entire education system needs a reform. Trade school needs to be encouraged and not thought of an option for failures.

Healthcare - Yes yes yes. You end up paying for it anyways. Getting sick or severely injured could bankrupt you. You pay more for your care because some people can't pay the bill. Unless you want to kick people out of the ED that can't pay for their care that will always be a contributing factor. Insurance companies just add to the admin costs.

It happens.

But if I was American my diverticulitis would've killed me or put in in more debt than I could repay in several lifetimes....

Hell just broken bones and stitches would have me hundreds of thousands in debt.

I'm extremely thankful for the Healthcare we've got in canada.
