This was the thing that continues to bother me so deeply about that slice of history, since I went most of my life only knowing the bullet points of Hilter's rise to power and only learned the finer points within the last five years or so. Hilter led a failed bloody coup against the German government, and not only was he not executed or imprisoned for life over it, his sentence was only five fucking years.

I'd always known the bare minimum about this era of his rise to power, which was that Hitler wrote Mein Kampf while he was in jail. When I much later found out about the Beer Hall Putsch and why he was in jail, I was floored that he somehow wasn't executed / life-imprisoned for a failed coup that left over a dozen people dead. But even still, I'd forgotten the details of his sentencing and subsequently checked the wiki due to this topic; the fact that his actual sentence was only five years is just plain aneurysm-inducing.

I believe the historical parallel to draw here is that the failure of the Weimar Republic to properly punish this upstart traitor led to something much, much worse down the road.

This isn't a unique event. This is how coups work. You sit at home playing video games while thousands of countrymen storm government buildings in an attempt to overthrow democracy. Usually it doesn't go well the first time, but those feelings fester, friction builds on both sides, and some years later you see people marching outside your suburb calling for a new dictator. That's what this is, literally an attempt to overthrow democracy. We're closer to Venezuela than WW2 Germany, but we're really testing our systems and pushing boundaries. In Venezuela, Maduro stacked the courts, gave them power over elections, and then gave them power over legislation, and we're only a few steps away.

We need to do much more than just jail a few violent protestors, insurrectionists, and domestic terrorists; we need to fix our system so that we don't have a repeat of this in 2024, 2028, and so on. Trump probably needs to be barred from ever holding office again, and we need to amend the Constitution to set clear guidelines for what happens when people reject fair elections.
