Came into work today and someone laid glue traps around the place. Sure enough it got a little field mouse. Gonna try vegetable oil to free it. Don't use glue traps!

They work like a treat though.

And if you want to feel merciful, check the traps often and as soon as you catch a mouse, stomp it for a less painful death.

Yup, put it in a box to keep it warm. Went to check on it and it was gone.

My grandmother used to have traps that doesn't kill the mouse so she can release it into the woods (rural town), one day a rat got in and chewed trough the metal wires.

Sometimes they even try to eat their own hand to free themselves

yeah, its cruel - caught one at my fathers place who still uses glue traps and I put it in a box, some oil to free him (yeah I know oil is bad, but its better to be free than to get crushed and die there), and left the box outside

Apparently they're more effective than the traps I'm using, I guess I need to switch. Thanks for the heads up.

The alternative is the use of rodenticides which make them die over the course of a few days while their blood thins out, and runs the risk of secondary poisoning to birds of prey/cats/etc that eat them.

Snap traps are the most humane but also least effective unfortunately.
(Well, besides hunting dog/mink teams but those only work in rural environments)

Nothing worse than hearing the helpless squeaks of a poor mouse waiting to die while you are trying to sleep.

Snap traps with peanut butter have worked well enough for me in the past. The poison traps had me finding dead bloated mice all around the house.

Also FTR to everyone saying "Poor mice :(", mice are actually really shitty animals lol. They pee and shit as they walk, and are really violent to one another. Like, to the point that one male will kill other mice that don't fall in line in their nest. They kill their babies pretty frequently too.

Not saying glue traps aren't cruel, they absolutely are. Just saying that mice aren't the cute cuddly innocent little animals they seem like lol.

Serious question: when you know one is kaught, do you just leave it until it dies, or free/finish it?

That's a personal choice. I would prefer not to free it because it'll likely end up back in the house. I don't really have the stomach to finish it off. Maybe if it were suffering I'd mercy kill it.

Good old-fashion snap traps can crush a mouse's skull or break it's spine killing it instantly. That's how I'd like to go if I were a mouse.

If I find one in the glue traps we use at work, I just throw the trap into the dumpster.

I do have a distinct memory of my mom finding a mouse in a glue trap at home and drowning it in the sink. I was surprised how quickly it drowned. Matter of seconds.

Yeah no fuck mice

They're hard to catch and super annoying. I once lived in a two story town home and for some reason had some annoying mice in my main bedroom. Not downstairs in the kitchen where the food is at, but upstairs in my bedroom where I dont eat or have food.

We have mice right now. Relocating one today. Unfortunately one seems to have moved within the box to a hole and fallen down it - couldnt do anything about that. But we will carefully tape the underside only now to prevent injury and future half-escapees. 2 to a box were cheaper than one. My family wants to switch to snap traps if it doesnt work out - but Im not really sure why it wouldnt - might just take a lot of relocating. I refuse for them to use glue.

Bear in mind you're going to need to relocate those mice at least 5 miles away, not just down the street. Otherwise theres a chance they might return.

Work in a pet warehouse, they have nets around that birds get trapped in from time to time

Usually they get the sanitation guy to shoot it with a high powered BB gun but the last couple theyve just left in the net to pretty much die of exhaustion trying to free themselves

The last one a coworker said fuck it and freed it and put it outside(think a wing was broken ) then got told dont do that again, leave it there

I understand you cant have animals in a pet warehouse but still fucked up, rather have someone end the suffering with a BB gun than let it die a slow death
