A transgender woman was shot dead on Christmas Day in what her friends believe was a hate crime incident, before she was misgendered by police in death. Friends and family of Courtney Eshay Key have spoken out after she was killed in the evening of 25 December in the East Chatham neighbourhood of Chicago. The 25-year-old was found dead in an incident initially reported as a hit-and-run crash, though it has since emerged she suffered gunshot wounds. To make matters worse, police had initially listed the proud transgender woman as a man and an unidentified John Doe, provoking anger from those who knew her over the indignities she suffered in death. Lifelong friend Beverly Ross told CBS2: We are human. We are real. Were tired of Chicago Police misgendering trans people, gender non-conforming people.

Theyre dehumanising our character. Key was still listed as male in Chicago Police systems days after the incident, the outlet reports, despite her identity now being known. While her death is being investigated as a homicide, police declined to confirm whether the case is being considered a potential hate crime, even though her loved ones believe she was likely targeted for being transgender. Beverly Ross added: I believe Eshay was targeted. We need to get to the bottom of this because Black trans lives matter. We are not going anywhere. Key is at least the 43rd transgender person to be been killed in the United States in 2020, the majority of which were Black and Latinx transgender women. While the details of these cases differ, it is clear that fatal violence disproportionately affects transgender women of colour particularly Black transgender women and that the intersections of racism, sexism, homophobia, biphobia, transphobia and unchecked access to guns conspire to deprive them of employment, housing, healthcare and other necessities. As is too often the case in the reporting of anti-transgender violence, many of these victims are misgendered in local police statements and media reports, which can delay our awareness of deadly incidents.

They misgendered an unidentified person? Idk but it seems like the people outraged are grasping at straws unless there was some way to tell the person was transgender.

I mean, from the pictures in the article, it was pretty clear shed be gendered as a woman under any normal circumstances.

Police should definitely be a lot more concerned with whether they are using "john doe" or "jane doe" instead of finding the murderer.

By any chance, were the gunshot wounds to the face? That definitely can hinder identification depending on the severerity of the wound.

Good to know the misgendering is the real crime, not the actual killing.

If theyre purposely misgendering in order to ignore a common motive, yeah, thats a pretty important distinction to make.

I'm sure the police, the detectives, and the coroner care more about gender and identity politics than doing their jobs properly.

Not saying that to cheapen her death, but man this is ridiculous.

There's a certain subreddit that has avoided much public attention.

It posts fights that were taken way too far. One such fight I wish I hadn't seen yesterday was that of a transgender woman being beaten to death on a public bus here in America. I won't go into details, but if they survived, it's not a quality of life worth living after. People (the assailants against these transgender individuals, if you can even call them people) can be absolute monsters who deserve nothing less than to live the rest of their lives in a windowless, concrete, 4x4 cell with nothing to eat but bread and water. Death is too swift for some. This man was so upset by another person's existence that they killed them. No word on whether this individual has been apprehended or not.

If there's a trend of trans people being killed for being trans, wouldn't caring about "gender and identity politics" be a part of doing their jobs properly?

It says it was originally reported as a hit and run crash. Could it be that the body was totally mangled and they had trouble telling anything about the corpse other than "identifying body parts"?
