Honestly I am ignorant of the actual studies behind it but

Emotional support animals seem like such a load of bullshit in a huge amount of cases and just an excuse for people to take their dogs places

I saw one at disney world that was so freaked out by the amount of people around it that the owner or someone in their group had to pick it up and carry it and that's just fucked up

Eh. People abuse it to be sure, but I had my Bull Terrier registered as an ESA so that I could keep him (homeowner association c***s) and also bring him on the plane with me. Fuck your dirty looks, if it was safer for animals to fly I'd do it the "normal" way but too many dogs freeze to death or get mistreated by the crew.

They are helpful for people with PTSD or chronic depression but that doesn't mean they should be allowed on a plane.

Yeah. I definitely wouldn't trust TSA on handling animals. Just seems overall like a bad idea. I don't blame you.

How are people that need emotional support animals supposed to fly?

Not supporting either side right now, I don't know enough about this situation to know my opinion either way. My only experience with emotional support animals is working in a retail store, where people would bring in dogs without the emotional support vest thing, and we couldn't ask them to leave, could only as them if the animal was emotional support or not.

It was a hassle, and people abused it obviously, and I am not in favor of that. Seems pretty crappy to exclude the people that need it from being able to fly that airline though.

I got my dog listed as an emotional support animal this year, and it was a $130 payment followed by a 2 minute phone call w/ a therapist where the only question was "Why do you think an emotional support animal would help?" I just said cause COVID was stressful, and she responds with "Yep, sounds like you really need a dog then!" and done.

You make appropriate plans to be without your animal for however long you need to. It's an emotional support animal not a "life dependency animal"

Good thing overall. I'd be fine with exceptions like "your animal must have passed some third party organization's test for standards for a service animal" or something like that, but otherwise the average housepet has no place in a plane if it cannot be in a cage or container.

"Beginning Jan. 11, Alaska will only allow service dogs, which it defined in a press release as dogs that are " specially trained to perform tasks for the benefit of a qualified individual with a disability," including psychiatric service dogs, the airline said Tuesday in a news release."

People who really need them will still be able to have them, no worries. This was all intended to put a stop to abusing the emotional support stuff.

Service animals are blind guide dogs and such but they're not the only kind. You can get a service dog for things like picking shit up off the ground floor you because you have a bad back. They have to pass level 3 obedience training which is very difficult and also Have service training.

One of the tests for level 3 obedience is to lie down and stay perfectly still for 15 minutes while a bunch of people step over the dog constantly during that time.

There actually aren't any legal requirements for service dog training. They just need to be trained to perform specific tasks.

There's one legal requirement. You have to have a disability. You can't have a service dog without a disability. You can have a dog that was trained as a service dog but if they're not helping you with a disability they're not a service dog.

The other requirements I mentioned are for private certification. Which is nice but not legally required.

The magic questions, incidentally the ones you can legally ask:
Is the animal required because of a disability?
What work or task has the animal been trained to perform?

I feel badly for people that use them, but other people with medical issues can't be around animals, and your disability doesn't trump theirs.
