#77. Shovel Knight (PC, 2014)
Yes, the word "implemented" was important!
Somehow a retro breath of fresh air kind of games keeps on remaining a breath of fresh air. Maybe one of the (key words) last great retro platformers to come out before maybe losing some luster, Shovel Knight was a quirky twist on your Mega Man and/or Mario 3 style- using obviously a shovel as your main attack, but picking up a bunch of special weapons along the way. Maybe I only say Mario 3 for the level select style, but thats fine.I find myself struggling of things to say other than it's just a game that's perfectly my alley and feels great. Having the Scrooge McDuck pogo bounce be a main traversal/enemy attack mechanic is one that is always desired for me in games. Adding the Dark Souls element too of when you die, youlose all your cash and need to go back to collect it works too. A lot of flavor in all the enemy boss knights, and the characters and mini-games you can interact with in the main town. And wow, has this game really exploded in its popularity. One day, I need to play all its DLCs, they seem really deep and nice and lore-y from what I can tell.

Up Next: The 4th movie to a fantastic trilogy.

#57. WWF No Mercy (N64, 2000)

The gameshark modding community did some insane work with this game. Adding in Hell in a Cell was insane. Anyway this game is the best wrestling game there has ever been. It has a great create a wrestler feature, very fun combat that evolved what was seen in Revenge and World Tour. The game looks absolutely terrible, but that is part of its charm. Every person in this game is a horrible polygon mess.

#62 - Tetris Effect (PC, 2018)

Tetris Effect is not so much a game, but an experience. You are still moving tetrominoes down a grid and clearing lines, but thats not what you will be focusing on when playing. There are about 30 levels to play through, as you take in the visuals surrounding the grid. Tetris Effect will take you through the sea, onto the moon, and through the sky in a hot air balloon. While it does this, it will play some chill music and flash pretty colors and particles in your face. When you move the pieces, little sound bytes will play that sync up with the music. In some of the other levels, the music will ramp up in volume and really test your Tetris capabilities by turning up the speed on you to a crazy level.

At the end, it culminates in an absolutely gorgeous display that uses several of the levels visuals, while the most beautiful song plays in the background. If you have a means to play the game in VR, it really enhances all the aspects of the game to an even more absurd degree.

Im not ashamed to say that this game has made me cry. Several times, in fact. A somewhat large handful of games have accomplished that feat, but most, if not all of the others to do so have done it through a sad story, or a particularly overwhelming moment. Tetris Effect is the only one to do so only through emotional sensory overload. Theres no story or driving force behind making this game stick in my mind, but it is still a game I will likely never forget.

#56. The Legend of Zelda II: Adventure of Link (NES, 1987)

The only Zelda game on my list. A series I have played nearly every game in and don't really like many of them. Yet I keep playing them. Like I am supposed to or something? Anyway the most unique one with the most RPG elements is the one I love most. This was one of the first games I ever beat. Fell in love with it watching my Dad play it when I was super little. He is insane for the Zelda series, but only the 2D ones. When it went 3D he hated it. This game is unforgiving as they come. There are some amazing songs in here and it spawned the only good super big stage in Smash Bros. Remember when Link didn't wear pants? Good times.

#76. Back to the Future: The Game (2010, PS3)
GREAT SCOTT! I know, this is heavy. I am a huge BTTF fan, so this game was perfect for me.
As I said in my hint, this Telltale game does an absolutely fantastic job of showcasing what a 4th movie would've been like... or really, there's probably at least 3 movies of content in these 5 episodes, if not more, but we can consider it a 4th movie! It being a Telltale game you know exactly what you're getting as gameplay, and it's fine there. The point and click style "puzzles" are satisfying if not really challenging at all in what you're supposed to do, but still remain clever. Other than that, the rest of this is me talking as if it were a movie! No spoilers though, just the basic plot.

The story starts right after the end of the 3rd movie (well technically after a fakeout dream sequence where Marty re-imagines the start of the first movie going a bit differently), with Doc having gone on his train adventures, but not returning, so everyone believes he is missing and start estate selling his stuff off. The DeLorean somehow shows back up empty with a message from Doc needing help from Marty at... some point in the past as, naturally, it turns out he's been killed at some point. So another adventure awaits!

It's everything you'd expect a several-plot BTTF movie(s) to feel like (I believe the directors were at least modestly involved). It hits all your usual beats from the movies, a lot of the same types of jokes, a fantastic set of humor, but introduces its own freshness to the mix too. So it really is not like a re-hash of the old movies like you could argue the 2nd and 3rd movies were (only in the sense it does dip its pen into the going back into a timeline we just fixed because we also fucked something else up so we have to fixt he timeline again, though still different from the way BTTF2 did it). We get some new characters and relatives, they're pretty entertaining for the most part as characters. The overall plot and writing is simply outstanding, keeps you compelled the whole time with high stakes. It has good twists and turns, good references to the old movies, and the one little bit of things that characters will remember in a Telltale game is present in the alias Marty chooses for himself in the past (I chose Michael Corleone). The story takes place in several different time periods, and it weaves together well, and as always, this series does a great job with making sure inconsistencies and time travel related stuff all makes good story sense, doesn't get overly confusing for a time travel story, and has impeccable attention to detail in keeping the story accurate. The ending is a bit silly, but I guess the movies endings are too!

The voice acting is excellent. Christopher Lloyd reprises himself (and possibly other versions of himself). They got someone else for Marty and his Michael J Fox impression is impeccable (MJF does have a cameo at some point). Everyone else does a great job as well.

If you liked the BTTF sequels and the way that trilogy carried itself out, this is a must play. Although I'm not sure it's still available, but watching the "movie" version on youtube should still get the job done pretty well!

All in all, a fantastic love letter to the movies, with a ton of care put in.

Next up: A boss in this game is un-cannon-ically a Mets fan?

70. Tetris & Dr. Mario (SNES, 1994)

I wasn't sure exactly where or whether to put either of these two games on the list, so I just cheated and used the combined game for both! Ultimately, I much prefer my puzzle games competitive, and this game was one of the first to really branch off in that direction. Back when I used to play this with some friends in high school, we referred to the combined Tetris/Dr. Mario mode as "The Gauntlet" for some reason, which has stuck with me to this day. Tetris is definitely the better game of the two, but I have a soft spot for Dr. Mario, whose level-based progression satisfies my more completionist vibe. I imagine most everyone will have some version of Tetris on the list, and despite considering Tetris 99 and just basic NES Tetris, this seemed the most appropriate for my sensibilities. Good times all around here.
(Also, sorry, I don't particularly like Puyo Puyo so PPT/PPT2 never stood a chance.)

69. Minesweeper (PC, 1992)

Sometime in the mid-2000s I got really into Minesweeper. At first, I was just trying to see if I could figure out the game that baffled me when I was five years old, and after learning it wasn't actually especially hard I got pretty decent at it. I played mostly expert, got some pretty solid times, then kind of put it away after it lost its novelty.
At some point, though, it started becoming by go-to game for listening to podcasts or music. For whatever reason my brain needs some degree of basic activity when I'm just listening to something, otherwise I get too antsy and impatient. Minesweeper was perfect for covering that base of giving me enough stimulus and things to click on while not being too distracting from whatever I want to listen to. To this day, I still bust it out for some very casual games whenever I've got something on in the background. I'm at 8384 games played, with a solid 22% winrate.
Placing this was pretty hard, since like most mental puzzles (such as Sudoku or even Picross), the novelty wears off at a certain point and you can't specifically recapture the magic of when you were "figuring out" the game. So ultimately I decided for the meme placement since it captures the "importance" of it in my life while not seeming too high. Not bad for a little game pre-bundled with Windows!

70. Donkey Kong 64 (N64 ,1999)

The inclusion of this game is something I expect will spark some discussion, because it's not a game most of you like. It is, however, a game that is near and dear to me, because it's the first console game I ever owned. I got the jungle green N64 for Christmas in 1999. Up until that point, all I'd owned were GameBoy and PC games. I'd played Genesis and SNES and N64 and PS games with friends, but my parents were reluctant in getting me a console until it was nearly the new millennium. Imagine the first time you turn your own video game system on and the first thing you experience is the DK Rap. How could this game not be on the list?

Also, a note for Nintendo, who is obviously reading this: BRING BACK LANKY AND CHUNKY YOU COWARDS

69. Wario Land 4 (GBA, 2001)

Now Imagine you get a GBA a couple of years later, after having played GameBoy and GameBoy Color games for the past 6 or so years, and this is among the first games you play. People often talk about how vibrant the Mario games are, and how artfully designed they are, but Wario Land 4 takes the familiar bright palette of his archrival and marries it with the off-kilter and somewhat gruesome aesthetic for which Wario is known, and it does it masterfully. I'm not sure Nintendo made a better looking 2D platformer. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, Wario Land effectively ended here. The first WW game came out two years later, and aside from a half-baked attempt at a Wii game, Wario Land has remained a dormant series for the last 20 years, which is a shame, because it's an absolute treasure trove, and one that you should raid with Wario if you haven't already.

68. Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising (GBA, 2003)

67. Advance Wars: Days of Ruin (DS, 2008)

These games are really radically different in tone and style, despite being part of the same series and having similar gameplay. In part because of that, I couldn't in good conscience combine them into one series entry (for as much as I like AW1 and DS, these two are much better games, for two). These are the two most challenging and balanced of the AW games, but as you can see, the tone of each is evident even in still shots. Where the GBA games and Dual Strike had a bright, colorful take and a consistent and comical cast of characters, Days of Ruin chucked it all for a darker, grittier look and feel (it was 2008, after all - darker and gritter was in). The end results are two supremely different but almost equally satisfying games in a series that seems to have been effectively shut down by the success of Fire Emblem, which like Wario Land, is a damn shame.

I guess you could say the theme of these last four games is "stuff I love that Nintendo forgot about doing more with"

66. Claw (PC, 1997)

Claw is a game that climbed this list the more I thought about it. I think it could charitably be called a cult classic at this point, but the gist of it is this: You play as Captain Nathaniel J. Claw, a pirate cat, imprisoned by the Cocker Spaniards after the sinking of his ship (presumably by the Spaniard Armada). He escapes his prison - and his execution - and sets off in pursuit of the Amulet of Nine Lives, and the gems that give it its power.

The gameplay is a fairly challenging 2D platformer, littered with secrets and jokes that you might miss the first time through. You have a cutlass for taking out enemies up close, a pistol (with limited ammo) for ranged attacks, and occasionally, a magic spell and bundles of dynamite for trickier situations and/or bosses. The game itself is really beautifully designed. Even against today's fare, as a 2D platformer, it can hold its own pretty well. The attention to detail is really something, and the sound design is as good as you'll find in a game, especially of its era - the characters are fully voiced, in the seaside levels you can hear distant waves crashing and occasional gulls cawing, doors ka-chunk and clatter when you open and close them. It's really immersive in a way that games by and large weren't then.

Bottom line: find a way to give this a play. It's worth it.

#73 Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (Game Boy Advance, 2003)

The isometric gameplay of Final Fantasy Tactics was a natural fit for an iteration on the GBA. The gameplay all translates well to the handheld screen and although it was not capable of the same graphical effects, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance managed to look great and play smoothly.

When I first played it though, I wished it had just been a port of the Playstation game. The silly story and judge system took a lot of getting used to. I don't think I ever had a good time when I had to play a battle where "Fight" was banned. But for all the other laws, I think it added an extra element of strategy and consideration, mostly for the better. As for the story, at the very least it has produced a lot of memes, and I think it's probably more entertaining if you see Marche as an antihero. I grew to like it after playing for a while.

And I think the game is much better if you divorce it from the Playstation game, and just view it as something else altogether. Sure they both share the world name "Ivalice," but FFTA is a much more fanciful world with silly creatures and stupid Mewt and so on. The gameplay is similar, but simplified without the charge times and all that, and it ends up moving a lot faster. I also really like Sakimoto's soundtrack. I know a lot of people prefer Uematsu, but I think Sakimoto is really just as good, despite his different style.

#75. Mega Man 5 (NES, 1993)
Look I'm gonna be honest here. This has long been my favorite Mega Man and I don't really remember why, it's been a bit since I played it. I think though it mostly had to do with collectingthe MEGAMANV tokens, I enjoyed those as secrets, the fact it has a MYSTERIOUS VILLAIN WHO IS TOTALLY NOT DR. WILY and then it's actually not Dr. Wily at all, and the inclusion of the Jet and Punch suit types made for some interesting variations on gameplay.
But most importantly, it has 2 of my favorite robot masters -one for the robot master himself,Napalm Man, just thought he always looked cool plus he's blue and orange and gives Mega Man those colors, how can I not love him? And my favorite robot master stage in Gravity Man, just a fun idea for a stage.

#74. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (PS4, 2019)
"Dark Souls but..." this time its Samurai. This game came out just around the time I was really getting into this genre of games, and I appreciated this game's different take on the "series", with more of a focus on boss combat, and taking out regular enemies with stealth. Or at least that's how I played it. Plus, moving around in this game just felt better than it did in its brethren. There's a ton of minibosses which are at least modestly unique, but the major boss battles all are pretty cool and fun to fight. Some of my favorites are against Electrically charged Genichiro, Guardian + Headless Ape, Owl Father, and the final Isshin Battle. Not Demon of Hatred though, fuck that guy.
Also the game looks fantastic, and learning the counters and ways to handle each specific miniboss or major boss is satisfying.

Next up: Multiplayer at any speed!

#55. Kingdom Hearts (PS2, 2002)

A game that has tumbled mightily over the years. Formerly a near top 10 game for me. I loved playing this way back on a whim that maybe Disney+FF would be good. The game has just aged terribly and I am much older and cynical and a grump. I tried to play this again in prep of KH3 (which sucked btw) and just could not. I appreciate what it once meant to me but its just not a game I want to ever revisit again. Birth By Sleep was the last good KH game. It doesn't appear on my list but it is for sure more replayable than this. I know I sound negative on this game, it was fantastic in 2002. It was gorgeous, has a great soundtrack, and I do love seeing FF characters being silly dolts.

#54. Kingdom Hearts 2 (PS2, 2005)

This game is infinitely better than the original to control. The combat is far more crisp, but also way more silly. This opened the doors for the absolute crapfest of stuff happening that is KH3. Press triangle, 67000 hit combo. Anyway while being far better than the original, it is less charming and also started KH down the path of ... well whatever the story is.

#68. Brave Fencer Musashi (PS1, 1998)

I guess a lot of people bought this so they could play a Final Fantasy VIII demo? Hopefully they all gave the actual game a try, because Brave Fencer Musashi is the real treasure in that CD case.

This game was way more goofy and quirky than I expected. It doesn't take itself too seriously at all, and has some good writing and voice acting for the time. It's also allowed to get creative in the gameplay, with some open 3D areas, some more 2.5D sidescrolling. Some areas have action, some more puzzles, some require you to steal enemy abilities to make progress. There's some interesting characters and bosses too. Musashi was just a lot of fun the whole way through, and really enhanced by a lot of little details that do things right.

#61 - Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow Version (GB, 1998)

Pokemons first generation is an absolute mess of a game. Moves dont work properly. Sleep is completely broken. Fast Pokemon can kill with moves like Wrap from 100%. Psychic demolishes everything. Nothing is balanced whatsoever.

But fuck if it isnt just one of the most ambitious titles Nintendo has ever put out. It sparked a global phenomenon. The entire world was absolutely enthralled with these monsters, myself included. I got all three of Red, Blue, and Yellow. I got Stadium. I got Snap. I got the GBC Trading Card Game (which barely missed out on my list btw). I got my friends into the actual trading card game. I dont think Ive ever been more hooked on a game in my entire life. So yeah, the three games are actually kinda poopy, but it has left its (skid)mark on my life, for sure.
