75.) Rock Band 2 (PS3, 2008)

Rock Band 2 had one of the all-time great hype campaigns. Rock Band 1 was great - the perfect answer to the constant want from Guitar Hero to have bass vocal and drums added to the package and me and my college buddies were absolutely addicts.

They brought their demo trailer out to just outside my dorm to promote the game like they were a rock band and even had a little set up where you could perform one of the demo songs (possibly my favorite from the whole game, Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun") and naturally I did that and still have the picture from it somewhere.

Anyway, the game actually had some musical depth to it and as a musical nerd that naturally appealed to me far more than the more streamlined Guitar Hero experience. One of the best party games ever.

74.) Dynamite Headdy (Genesis, 1994)

Treasure makes the absolute best obscure platformers that absolutely stand the test of time. This one features a puppet named Headdy who is off to save the puppet show from evil cats. The entire "this is all just a performance gone wrong" aspect infects everything about the presentation of this game.

As for the gameplay its a fast based shmup platformer similar in some ways to Kirby as you change out Headdy's...well head for other heads with special powers, like a heavy iron head or a fireball head etc. I think this is the stronger of their two genesis games, outclassing fellow Treasure classic gunstar heroes, but gunstar gets onto all the compilations and this one doesn't. What gives?

Anyway, this is a good bit of fun. If you love platformers give it a go.

73.) Hitman 1&2 (2016 and 2018, PS4)

Borrowing from nick's playbook I am combining the two modern Hitman games - which are essentially the same game - into one big writeup. This is the first game where the episodic nature of its release really helped to enhance the product. The strength of Hitman as a game is the open-ended nature of the prompt. Every level has the same sort of growth to it. You learn first HOW to play the level and what its features are and then a find a way to execute your goals. If you're anything like me your first time through is bloody, messy and very obvious.

But since you got to spend some time with each level - without even the option of advancing to the next level yet thanks to the subscription model - you got a chance to savor the way each level was crafted and find all the various ways to crack it open. They even occasionally have special events in the levels that have to be solved differently because the new targets don't behave like the standard ones.

Amongst modern AAA games there is really just nothing like Hitman in terms of its scope and its attention to detail.

#85. Pokemon Puzzle League (N64, 2000)
Or Tetris Attack or Panel de Pon or whatever you'd like to call it. This is my favorite of the Tetris-style puzzle games, edging out Puyo Puyo and friends just a bit. Don't have toomuch to say about the game itself. You know what it is. It'sfun to set up combos and fight garbage. I haven't played too much of the other "variations" but I got this game originally because it was Pokemon and a puzzle game, so that was most ofthe draw I needed. There's a fair amount of variation in this game to keep it relatively fresh from the 1P campaign, to Two player (always a favorite), to the puzzle and challenge modes, andto the 3D mode which was pretty spiffy for its time! I think on a good day I could definitely have this higher on my list. Maybe I wish there was a little more content, but that's not really possible for a game like this so its fine! Also, shoutout to the GBC game Pokemon Puzzle Challenge for being a decent port (albeit game-based over show-based) and working in Gen 2. It's not nearly as charming though.

Plus a game having a direct connection to the show was a hoot. All the voice clips and Pokemon calls really make this stand out, from "Work Harder Ya Butt!" to "Oh Golf Club" to "Pasta Finale!" they never ge-, wait that's not what they're saying????

Next up: A game starring a canonical Mets fan, how can I not have it on my list???

#64. Telltale The Walking Dead Season 1 (PS3, 2012)

So while Tales from the Borderlands is the second best Telltale game, it is not Season 1 of TWD. This game left me a blubbering stain on the floor. Seasons 2, 3 and 4 are fine but nothing as close to season 1. Also this game which often had me struggling to make decisions, often getting to the end of the little timer. Did have 1 decision which I made as quick as I possibly could. I killed that little piece of shit Ben so damn fast and cheered the whole way down the clock tower. Fuck that jackass.

Anyway play this if you somehow haven't. Even if you don't like the TWD Universe.

#72 - Saints Row: The Third (360, 2011)

THQ deciding to break off from the GTA mold to carve out its own path as GTA on crack was perhaps one of the best decisions any game developer has ever made. The first two games in the series are so bland that I could not tell you a single thing about them today. Wait, one of them had a fight club type of thing you could do, and the only reason I remember it is because it takes a frustratingly long time to beat someone up in there.

Saints Row: The Third, on the other hand, has a million facets to remember. The character creator has a sex appeal slider that can make your boobs or penis massive. You can also make them naked and give them a voice like Male 1, Female 2, or Nolan North. The first mission in the game involves you jumping out of a jumbo jet, diving into people and shooting a bunch of others so you can steal one of their parachutes and save the girl. It is so absurd, youd think Im making it up. In lieu of having generic combat, you perform DDTs and other wrestling moves on people. Two of the weapons are a giant purple dildo and a Dubstep Gun. You can drive a 16-bit tank or a hoverjet. One of the side-missions tasks you with throwing yourself into traffic to cause as much damage and commit insurance fraud. Some of these things might be from Saints Row 4; I dunno, they kinda blend together.

However, the one thing I distinctly remember that is specifically from The Third is the mission that tasks you jumping out of a helicopter into a highrises pool, busting up a party and assassinating some dude, all while Kanyes Power plays in the background. It may not be the most fun or impressive mission in the game, but its the single most memorable mission in any open-world third-person shooter game Ive ever played, and also the best use of copyright music in any game Ive ever played. Double whammy!

I mean, I guess I'll post two in a row, whatever.

#71 - SSX3 (PS2, 2003)

I never played the original SSX; in fact I had never even seen what it was like, so Im not sure why I was drawn to buying SSX Tricky for my shiny new Gamecube so early in its life cycle, but it was a truly amazing experience. It had awesome characters, amazing levels, and a perfect arcade-y snowboard draw to it that I hadnt felt since the Snowboard Kids days. And it came out of nowhere for me. Choosing Psymon and navigating him down the various slopes while he yelled psychotic things at everyone and everything around him was a grand old time. And those levels! Aloha Ice Jam, Snowdream, and the Tokyo Megaplex are ridiculously memorable stages that have stuck with me 20 years later. How could they top such a high bar?!

With SSX3, thats how. Instead of a handful of levels, they made one big mountain. Hows that better, you ask? Because that mountain is divided into 3 peaks, each of those peaks are considerably different from each other, and also house about 7 levels worth of content each. And you can just snowboard in between them. You can just go start at the top and skate all the way down to the bottom. Itll take a good half hour to do it, but you can. They pulled this off in 2003. Thats some 2010s level shit they did!

Theres also several new gameplay mechanics that were introduced that SSX just doesnt feel complete without anymore, like board presses and handplants. They made it possible to indefinitely continue a combo as long as youre good enough to keep it going. I still think Tricky has the more memorable levels, but my biggest SSX memories will always be running down one of 3s slopes listening to the DJ talk about my wipeouts as he transitions from Red Hot Chili Peppers to Autopilot Off.

#63. Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call (3DS, 2014)

This is both games in the series. Curtain Call just has more songs so it takes the spot. The games play the exact same and look the exact same. So in my Canvas Curse I mentioned how few DS/3DS games used stylus well. This is another one in that rare class. I love me some FF music and this one has a ton of it. They also added from other Square series including my beloved Chrono Trigger. The stages come in form of battle, travel and cinematic. At the lowest difficulty this game is so easy anyone can play it. At the highest level you scratch up your screen trying frantically to keep up.

#62. Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber (N64, 1999)

A great series that is too often forgotten. I love the look of the battles in this for some reason. Its not like overly animated or anything, but it speaks to me. The battles can for sure drag, but there is also a ton of cool hidden stuff in plain sight. That random house on the map that looks like nothing? A WIZARD LIVES THERE! Lots of cool units to get in a variety of ways. Some quite complex. I should also mention Tactics Ogre, not on my list but play it.

#61. NHL 94, (SNES, 1993)

My first hockey game. I spent hundreds of hours playing this as a kid. I wanted to play as the Sens but they stunk something fierce and being the Penguins was like cheating. My buddy was always the Habs so I ended up being the Rangers of all teams a lot. Oh man my boys Mike Gartner and Esa Tikkanen. The Beezer in net. You can't stop these guys! Because initially I insisted on being my Sens, I lost a ton. I will never forget my first goal. For some reason my buddies goalie had gone out to the faceoff circle and passed it back to Ray Bourque who was in the crease. My buddy frantically cleared the puck, it hit the goalie in the ass and went right back in the net. Andrew McBain for credit for the goal. Great times.

#79 Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia (Nintendo DS, 2008)

I really love the so-called "Igavania" games. Although I could play endless games based on the Symphony of the Night formula, I appreciate that Order of Ecclesia deviates somewhat. Like Dawn of Sorrow, you acquire abilities from the enemies you defeat, but this game completely eschews the weapon system of other Castlevania games and you rely only on "Glyph" spells obtained from enemies.

Ecclesia also leaves the open-ended Castle for much of the game, allowing you to play through mostly linear stages that you select from the world map. Like the other games, there are multiple endings that can stop you early, but unfortunately in this game it's pretty hard to get anything but the good ending unless you play very sloppy and miss one of your objectives.

All things considered, a very good game, but there are better Castlevania games out there.

#76. Shovel Knight (PC, 2014)

Shovel Knight is obviously inspired by the old NES platformer games, and captures that feeling so well. It plays just as well as any of the top of the line games from back then. There's enough collecting and secrets to encourage you to explore and admire every area, but not enough to seem like a tedious slog. The knight bosses come in a good variety and provide interesting boss fights.

The game also provided a bunch of extra content by letting you play through as other knights. I'm a little torn on this for some reason. On one hand, more content and more characters and everything is great! The new characters all play differently too. But I think because I played characters back-to-back-to-back, it started to make the levels wear on me. I think I just overdid it with the game in the moment. Maybe I'll go back in a couple years and have this rocket back up my list when things seem fresh again.

#80 - The World Ends With You (DS, 2008)

The World Ends With You is one DS game where the stylus matters a lot, and is hard to master. The game stars Neku, an extremely introverted boy who recently died and is forced to play in the Reapers' Game to return to life. The main gimmick of the game is that there is combat on both screens of the DS, and it forces you to both use the buttons to control the top screen and the stylus to control the bottom. It's a very rewarding experience and I enjoyed a good amount of the game, especially the soundtrack - Three Minutes Clapping is still one of my favorite video game songs.

#79 - Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth - Hacker's Memory (Vita, 2018)

Digimon Story has been mentioned quite a few times already, they are a bunch of JRPGs released recently with a very self-aware translation. This game in particular has a worse storyline and more annoying side characters than the first game, but the core turn-based combat and monster collecting/raising is still just as good. Only annoyance for me is the platinum took two trips through almost the entire game, and it's a long one. I still remember getting this one finished in an airplane flying back from Extra Life back in 2018, it was quite the experience.

#78 - The Walking Dead Season One (Vita, 2012)

Nick just went over this one; this is the best Telltale game released and none of their other titles come close. Even with Telltale's continuance throughout their games of choices that barely matter in the end, this one has the best story line and characters and wraps it up with a successful final episode. The Vita version runs like absolute garbage but it didn't detract from the game too much. I played Season Two but was ultimately disappointed in how it played out - for me, the story basically ends here.

#77 - Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale (PC, 2010)

Capitalism, ho! One of the more unique games on this list, Recettear stars a young girl named Recette tasked with running an item shop to pay off a huge debt accumulated by her father. The item shop portion of the game has a surprising amount of depth, with different ways to accumulate more money through several random events, haggling with customers, and crafting more items through materials gained from dungeon crawling. Speaking of the dungeons, this is probably the one section that could have used more improvement, as the dungeons are somewhat boring to traverse as you continue through the game as they all consist of the same corridors and most enemies are simply palette swaps of each other. The game however is the only one of its kind to gain any success here, and I definitely sinked a good amount of hours into it myself.

#3 Simpsons Arcade: 178
#4 Ogre Battle 64: 172
#4 The Walking Dead Season 1: 172
#6 NHL '94: 167
#7 Punch-Out!!: 153
#8 Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga: 143
#9 Sonic the Hedgehog 2: 140

#84. Marvel's Spider-Man (PS4, 2018)
This is very simple, because the gameplay here is very good, but not great (its fun but repetitive). It's all about the traversal. Getting around feels FANTASTIC and that's really all you can ask out of a Spider-Man game. I never played that PS2 one that everyone loves- I can't imagine that has better control than this one. Youcan move around in so many ways, and ways to do it QUICKLY. From just swinging, to wall climbing or running (vertical or horizontal), to the side-pull-shots (not sure what to call these, the game had a name I forgot... when youuse the side of a building or something to help stabilize your forward momentum), to the point launches where you zip to a point and just propel yourself forward. It feels incredible. The story does good work here too. Even with blowing through a ton of villains, it doesn't feel the way that like, Reimi's Spider-Man 3 did. The boss fights are good (nice shoutout to one of them in Miles Morales), there's enough collectibles and things to do to keep you satisfied, and it's a solid difficulty level on the upper difficulties. The weapons and gadgets are good, but could be better. I do like the wind blast one where you can just blow foes into the air and then knock them off a roof. I also really enjoy how "anatomically correct" Manhattan is, with capturing a lot of the big locations being a big sidequest of the game. Though they didn't do a good job with New Jersey :(

Peter and Doc Ock's relationship is great also, as is the voice acting from everyone (especially JJJ, of course. Him as a Sean Hannity-esque political pundit with a podcast is perfect for him, newspapers being not really a thing these days).

Coolest thing you can do of course is climb to the top of the WTC or Avengers Tower, whichever you prefer. Or both. And dive off with a ground slam. Then casually high five the dude you landed next to.

You can fast travel too for hilarious scenes like this but... you're goddamn Spider-Man why would you ever fast travel?

Next up: A puzzle game starring an enemy from a certain mascot's game. (No it's not Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine again)

#75. Thunder Force V (PS1, 1998)

I feel like my list has a lot of shoot em ups on it already, but it's been a genre I thought was cool 30 years ago, and still enjoy today, and played off and on the whole time between, so uh here's another one.

Thunder Force is a shoot em up series that had a good run in the '90s, but I only ever played this one game. The previous few games were on the Genesis, but then Technosoft tried to really dial it up when they jumped to the Saturn/Playstation. At the time, I remember just feeling that this game oozed style. It has a futuristc cyber-techno aesthetic, which was the coolest thing then, of course. Working Designs also localized the game for the US, a company that put a lot of care into their games (sometimes too much), and as a result they tried to fancy things up, including a shiny reflective boxart, It just felt cool to play this game.

Behind all the appearance actually is a very cool game too. The music rocks hard and with lots of energy. All the bosses have multiple parts to attack and destroy, along with multiple phases. You can get up to three orbs rotating around you, which can absorb enemy bullets. You can also use the orbs to fire a super powered version of your weapon, but then the orbs are drained and disappear when hit by a bullet. You get five different weapons to use, which you can rotate between freely at any time. The coolest of these is the Free Range gun, which takes a lot of work to control, but can fire in any direction and does more damage the closer you are to an enemy. TFV can be pretty tough, generally fair but with a few gotcha moments. And then there's a final boss that has some severe final boss syndrome of being way harder than everything. But once you get used to the five different weapons and swapping as needed, it becomes a lot more manageable and fun.

78. Super Mario Bros. (NES, 1985)

At the outset of making this list, I had no intention of trying to reward games for being "important" or "influential". Somehow, this managed to sneak its way onto the list anyway, for two particular reasons. One, Mario platformers are one of my favorite all-time series, many of whom I have played and replayed and replayed again over the course of 30 years of gaming. In my mainline Mario game ranking this one is the big delineation point between the "good" and the "great" games, perhaps occupying a space on either side depending on what perspective I'm taking. There's a degree to which putting down the path for so many games (in and out of the series) that will be on this list later is of indisputable worth.
Second, just playing the hell out of Super Mario Bros. 35 for the month after its release went a long way toward increasing my fondness of the game and, most of all, its level design. Turns out the folks making the original Mario Bros. were very good at making smart platformer levels, and getting to know each of them a little more intimately than I had ever bothered to do before made them feel a lot better. Mario 1 also stands out especially well compared to its sequels, either American (SMB2/Doki Doki Panic) through its simplicity and ease of play, or Japanese (Lost Levels) because it doesn't overstep the difficulty to a frustrating place. It's a game that, despite controls a little tight by modern platformer and Mario-platformer standards, holds up well and is especially playable. And maybe there's a teeny bit of me that wanted to channel the spirit of "praise the important historical artifact" within this list.

77. Mario Tennis (N64, 2000)

Despite the name, what really made this game stand out is its quality as a really really good and simple tennis simulation. The Mario-based gimmicks are pretty much limited to the Bowser court, which has items and tilts and isn't very good, and if we're stretching, the degree to which characters like Boo and Shy Guy cause the ball to spin. Otherwise, it's just Tennis, baby! And it feels very satisfying. Controls amount to a couple of basic types of swings, and a couple of more complex inputs for lobs and drop shots, but you're basically just tasked with trying to position yourself and fake out your opponent. It's perfect! Later Mario Tennis games leaned into Marioified special moves and I wasn't interested in any of that. As someone who has played...enough real-life tennis, I just enjoyed the purest experience of that in game form, and of course it was Mario (or maybe more fairly, Camelot) that nailed it.

#83. Adventures of Lolo (NES, 1989)
Lolo, originally a Kirby boss of all things, stars in this very neat and pretty involved puzzle-"platformer" game for its time. Being a top down, theres no actual "platforming" but reaction times still matter in this game. On each map, the goal is to collect all the tokens, get the treasure, and get to the exit. But there are enemies who wish to kill you, each with their own puzzle-like mechanics, like the skulls that zoom in on you, the guys that only stay on the grass, or the totems that shoot you dead if you simply cross their path. So between pushing blocks around, using water and other obstacles smartly, routing, using your one-time power up per level (like a bridge or turn an enemy into a block), and the timing of when to get what all matters, since getting the final token generally wakes up all the enemies, but you need all the tokens before you get the treasure. It's a great puzzle game that isn't too hard but not too easy, and the levels are satisfying to solve. Think of it as sort of a precursor to Baba is You, but much less complicated. Again, maybe I shouldn't have it this high, but its a satisfying and unique puzzle game, and impressive for its time.

God, that repetitive music though.

Next up: SHOES!!! ...nevermind.

actually the Lolo series started out with the Eggerland games on the MSX. Some of the games had a level editor, and others had the levels strung together in a "dungeon" format. The first Adventures of Lolo game in the US was actually a new game/remix of older levels in the vein of Snakebird Primer aimed at less experienced players (the levels in the US versions of Lolo "2" and "3" are also different/easier, and the european version of the game boy one added some easier levels before getting to the harder ones)

it's a pretty neat series (other than some dumb things like forcing enemies to respawn in different locations that can only be figured out through trial and error) and it would be cool to see a modern revival of it.

#74. Final Fantasy Tactics (PS1, 1998)

Final Fantasy Tactics was my gateway into strategy RPGs, a sub-genre I really had no clue about until I played this. I still haven't played a ton of sRPGs, but it was nice to get some familiar classes and spells and monsters in there to help with the segue.

The first time I played it, I really didn't take in the full depth or politics of the story. Maybe this is partly due to the slow speed I went through the first time, and maybe this is partly due to the PS1 translation. As I came back though, the story seemed smarter, and I was able to fully track characters and their intentions, and it was a lot more interesting.

There's obviously a lot of depth to the jobs and abilities and allocation of points you can do. It was fun to experiment with these, give Rad some goofy job and have him carry the team, give Ramza a bunch of Geomancer skills for some reason, whatever. I never got as crazy with customizing this as a bunch of other people do, and not even as much as I did in other games with character customization, but it's been a fun time for the amount I have played it.

a bunch of EBA "spoilers" are below so just take heed

#78. Elite Beat Agents (DS, 2006)
What a fantastic, wacky, and lovably charming little game this turned out to be. Honestly, should be higher (sorry I'm gonna do this a lot probably, so I just did and made it number 78). I think everyone knows what kind of game this is but just in case, its a Rhythm game based on tapping circles on your DS touchpad to the indicated (and sometimes syncopated) beats. You play a group of agents tasked with helping the general community with various perils they are in, ranging from... y'know I was gonna list em here but I'm about to rank em below so have fun!

The scenarios are (basically) all fantastic and weird, and all have a ton of heart. How well you do at the song, shows the characters either succeeding or failing at what they're trying to do,in different parts, based on what part of the song you're on.And then ultimately passing the song succeeds in their goal... or fails if you fail, obviously. With a Phoenix Wright style wrap-up image at the end. The track list is pretty solid, though not fantastic but I could barely tell you that most(all?) of them are covers. Ultimately, we save the world from music-hating Rhomulan aliens to the rockin' tunes of Jumpin Jack Flash, but not before making a little girl not sad about her ghost dad, to You're The Inspiration, which is really sad and gets me every time (the beats in this song sound different than the rest). I also like all the characters show up in each other's scenarios, and then they're all at the end obviously. Makes it feel like a nice little community where these people all know each other.

Anyway, I suppose I will rank the scenarios, based on some unknown combination of Song and Scenario.

Note this is the general overall order of my list, which takes precedent over the way I named the categories which aren't perfect.

A Tier of their own:
You're The Inspiration--A daughter and her mother cope with the tragic death of her father at Christmas :(

Jumpin' Jack Flash-- The community has held off the music-hating aliens for now!! But they have turned our to stone!! Only the power of music can save them now!!

Good or Great songs/Great plots:
September--An overworked weatherlady finally has a weekend to spend with her son outdoors except it is going to rain and fighting the dilemma of disappointing her son vs lying to the viewers she says it is going to be sunny, so she must use fans, hang gliders, and anti-rain dances to make it not rain!

Highway Star--A boy's dog takes a nap on a pickup truck, winds up 300 miles away, and has to make his way back home!

ABC--The pet cat must save a wandering baby from the perils of a construction site!

Believe--An out-of-work down-on-her-luck singer must work her way up to her dreams!

Bad Song/Great plot:
The Anthem--A baseball star falls from grace, and becomes a theme park worker, but must use his baseball skills to help defeat a rogue lava monster!

Good Songs/Good Plots:
Canned Heat--A ninja father and son's car company has its plans stolen by a rival company, so the father tasks his son to infiltrate and retrieve the plans!

Material Girl--A pair of diva celebrities on a cruise with no survival skills are shipwrecked on a deserted island and must survive with the help of animal friends using only the art of seduction!

Survivor--A nut-loving truck driver must put a stop to the hoards of kissing zombies and a mushroom crab overlord who just happen to be weak to nuts!

Great songs/Mediocre Plots:
Rock This Town--A Magician and his assistant must stop the card bandits from ransacking the casino so they can perform!

I Was Born To Love You--TOTALLY NOT DA VINCI must win over TOTALLY NOT MONA LISA with his art and inventions!

Let's Dance--An Oil Tycoon goes bankrupt when his well dries up, he loses everything to his wife and must make his way back to the top!

Bad songs/Good plots:
La La--A sprinter has fallen ill with a fever and it's up to a white blood cell nurse to fight off the evil viruses before the big race!

Without A Fight--The music-hating aliens finally attack and turn everyone who loves music to stone!

Meh or Bad Songs/Mediocre plots:
Walkie Talkie Man--A Babysitter needs help watching the kids so she knows if she can go steady with my boyfriend!

Sk8r Boi--An over-ticketed Taxi driver must drive a pregnant woman to the hospital! (This song is fine though I guess)

Makes No Difference--A director must make an epic movie featuring Meowzilla!

YMCA--A sea captain searching for treasure is abandoned by his crew!

Did I spend too much time on this? YOU BET KID!!

Up Next (real #82): A game for people who smoke or people who drink, like if you drink beer and you get drunk or if you smoke weed and you get high or anything if you just be getting fucked up

Sorry for making the last hint really weird, this one is much easier to offset it :)

#82 Braid (PS3, 2008)
The game that launched a thousand indies. Simply, a neat and creative puzzle game centered entirely around time travel was a puzzle game I always knew I needed and finally got. The art style looks very eloquent and these are some tricky puzzles that really make you feel good for solving them. The way it keeps expanding on the time mechanics is great, between stuff that is and isn't affected by time, things that move with you, areas where time stops, items that break permanently, and the ring of slowing shit down. All good stuff. I like how the puzzle pieces also were a part of the solution sometimes too (ie, creating an extra platform). I think there may have been some points where my solution was cheesed though. I think this game does run a little pretentious with its plot, but I guess it needed to be framed around something. The moment that stands out for me is one level I was stuck on and was just messing around until I realized that the enemies can bounce off of YOUR head completely by accident!

So yeah, fun puzzle game, and I'm glad it exists for the fact that a lot of my favorite indie games would not exist without it. We'll be seeing those later. Looking forward to replaying this on the remaster this year, and finally getting that damn 4 hour star.

Up next: A game with a subtitle that at some point you probably realized you have been calling the wrong name all these years. I think everyone knows this by now but if not, prepare to have your mind blown?

#70 - Doki Doki Literature Club (PC, 2018)

For the one time in my list, I refuse to go too far into why I enjoyed this game so much. I know were more than 2 years removed from when this game took the internet by storm, but if you somehow have never heard of this game and dont mind a 3 hour read, I highly recommend checking it out. Its free. Go search for it on Steam and grab it. Dont look at the tags or the reviews; just download it and see for yourself what its about. It is not your run-of-the-mill dating sim. It. goes places.

Caveat: if you suffer from depression or have ever had a bad experience with someone near you having suicidal thoughts or tendencies, please do not play this game. It is not for everyone. That said, it had me glued to my screen until I finished it, and there are a good 10-15 moments that will absolutely stick with me forever.

#78 Gladiator (MS-DOS, 1995)

Gladiator is another old indie DOS game from when I was a kid. This game is an action RPG with a 2D top-down perspective. The gameplay is a little similar to Gauntlet, but differs in that the enemies you fight are similar in strength to you, and therefore you will recruit a large mercenary team of various classes to fight along with you. So think Gauntlet meets Final Fantasy Tactics. When you deploy to battle, you can control only one character at a time, while your allies fight using less-than-perfect AI. However, the game also allows up to 4 player local cooperative play, allowing three friends to control your allies, which was really neat! As the game progresses, your characters will level up and gain new abilities. If they die in battle though, you lose them permanently and have to recruit a replacement.

It certainly had its rough edges, though. I recall a number of glitches and occasional soft locking. But the game was compelling enough that it didn't really bother me at the time.

Gladiator also featured a level and campaign editor which I took full advantage of, creating many levels for me and my brothers/friends to play through. This game gave me hundreds of hours to time and it was very enjoyable.

72.) Double Dragon Neon (2012, PS3)

Time for some Bimmy to Jimmy action! I am not exactly a PUN sized fan of shmups but as you can see from a couple items it is a genre I enjoy. Double Dragon Neon was an awesome example. The game just has a sense of style. The same sort of late 80s throwbacking that makes Cobra Kai such a success is on display in this one too. The various tapedecks contained special move secrets was a very cool touch and the game was legitimately pretty funny in places.

time to copy wigs' list and change things around just enough to avoid plagiarism...

76. Chip's Challenge (PC, 1990)

An extremely basic PC puzzle game from the early 90's, Chip's Challenge involves the titular character racing around mazes to collect the required number of computer chips in order to reach the exit. Some of the various obstacles you'll encounter are block puzzles, colored keys and doors, various footwear required to traverse fire/ice/etc., and enemies like fireballs and, uh, "teeth". It's fairly standard stuff, but the game does a really good job at keeping challenges fresh and not getting bogged down by samey-ness. (I liked Adventures of Lolo, but there are definitely times when that game got a little repetitive.) The colorful but simple visual style actually holds up really nicely, and it's one of the things that got me addicted to playing it in the late 90's. I'm not sure it entirely holds up to a #76 standard, but it's a neat game that is one of the first clever exploration/level-based puzzle games I ever got into. I think there's some pretty easily-accessible ways to get this game now; might be worth checking out if you can manage it!

75. Elite Beat Agents (DS, 2006)

Hmm, where have I seen this one before...? EBA isn't my favorite, nor the deepest, nor most replayable, rhythm game of all-time, and it's not particularly great by any of those standards. What it does have is oodles of charm and a strange-but-engaging premise, reminiscent of other story-based rhythm games like Parappa the Rapper.
Elite Beat Agents is a rhythm game with a plot, and that plot is quite silly: You play as a cheer squad service, tasked with raising the morale of various struggling strangers in desperate need of help. And of course, you do this by tapping and dragging your stylus along numbered buttons/paths in time with popular music. The core gameplay loop is very engaging, it's a smart use of the DS touch screen (there's a decent amount of this on my list, it seems), and the storyline is both largely humorous and unexpectedly touching. I had first played its Japanese predecessor, Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan!, which largely goes through the same story beats, but ended up loving the sequel more due to the English translation (with my lack of Japanese knowledge) giving the stories more emotional oomph.
I think the game's a little too thin and easy to ever go much higher than this, though. 19 songs is very small for a rhythm game songlist (especially by 2006) and the only difficulties really worth playing once you've gotten the core gameplay down are the two hardest, which are essentially the same. (The hardest has slightly smaller targets and flips the layout of the chart.) But it left quite an impression - enough to get a placement here.
Top 5 Songs: Canned Heat - Jumpin' Jack Flash - September - You're The Inspiration - The Anthem (for laughs)

#60. Grandia 2 (PC/PS2, 2002)

So for some reason, I got this on PC. I legit do not remember why. In fact until this writeup I forgot I had even played it on PC first. I listed it as PS2 in my prep. Anyway, I played this before Grandia 1. Again I am not sure how. I really have no idea how this game came into my life. I am so glad it did. The combat is pretty unique compared to a lot of other jRPGs and features some of the cheesiest one liners when casting spells. The cast is a mix of super generic and pretty cool The look of the game shows its age pretty bad now, but was great in 2002. I didn't finish the game on PC because my PC was a steaming pile of trash and crashed a lot trying to run demanding games. On one of the crashes it erased all my save data. So yeah PS2 get and play there. Why isn't the collection on PS4!?
